..I thought my 14 bolt was un-breakable...

I would say....those pics show some evidence...of "Shock load"... /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

Have you done any reverse drops? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I personally am still not convinced that a 14 bolt would fail from a shock load with 35" tires on it.

I'm still putting my $$$ on carrier bearing preload.

They're not dis-colored... /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif
I bet those gears get...a couple good bumps...every time he takes it out... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

You're right...they're not discolored. They're stripped...as in, the backlash has been opening up every time he romps on it since the day they were installed.

I doubt that. For that to happen the adjuster lock downs would have had to come out, AND if they did, it would loose carrier bearing preload and eat the ring and pinion. He would have heard it before it broke a looong time ago.

Yep. The spanner lock downs were still bolted tight and the carrier didn't loosen up..
I even staked the threads on the pinon because i've heard of the pinion nut coming loose and the pinion dropping into the ring gear gernading the gearset.. so that didn't come loose either..

So guess your not takin the k5 to hollister?

Its almost ready for the rocks... /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

I would say from the picture that you had too much backlash. The wear patern appears to be all the way to the top of the tooth. There should be a small shoulder between the wear pattern (shiny spot) and the top of the tooth. If it is shiny all the way to the top then it ABSOLUTELY had too much backlash. Could have been set up wrong or could have been not enough carrier preload which would allow backlash to increase under load. Too Much backlash = busted gear teeth due to the extra play allowing the teeth to slam harder when a load is release and reapplied (shifts) and because you are loading the weaker and thinner part of the tooth.

yukon just reboxes other peoples stuff. they buy up a lot of stock from different sources and rebox all of it into the same boxes and part numbers. when yu open a yukon box you could be getting a brand new stock spicer set or the aformentioned "chinese crap" or anything in between. you never really know till you open the box.
