I want to more power out of my 88. I would like to learn how to tune my truck. The problem is, i dont even know where to start. Can someone get me going in the right direction? What will i need? Thanks.

Read the top post in this section, then read my thread titled something like "my tbi chip burning thread/adventure. Then go onto thirdgen.org and read every single sticky in the TBI section and prom burning section. THats a good start.

Basics,

You need a programmer, Modify your ecm to accept the reprogrammable chips, a laptop with tunerproRT installed on it, and a aldl data cable.

I would start with a major tune up...maybe even do a compression test to make sure the motor is sound before making ANY mods to it.
Then proceed as others can advise, because I am lost w/ electronics!

I would start with a major tune up
Done less than 500 miles ago. New plugs, new wires, MSD coil, Mallory ignition tune up kit, oil change w/ synthetic oil, new rear main, coolant flush, new thermo, headers, on and on and on. I ran a compression check and all the cylinders are great. Even removed the valve cover and inspected the valve seals. Every sunday i do preventive maintenance checks. The motor hasnt even broke 100k miles yet, i got 82k on the clock. It is very strong and doesnt skip a beat. I am about to send my injectors out to have them cleaned and rebuilt, so while the truck is down i wanted to go ahead and start gathering everything i need to start tuning my truck.

awesome plan....you know you have a good baseline to start from now!

Cable, $59.95

Programmer, $85.00

And then a couple little things from mouser electronics that i will get for you in a few that total i think $13.00?

Then downloand the tunerproRT program that is free.(donations accepted on the site)

With that as long as you already have the laptop, your off and running. I guess that comes out to $158 plus a few bucks shipping, but you get the idea. Seriously read my thread, i start from a total newb to a programing fool.

I tried finding it, and i couldnt. If you find it can you please post it. I would love to read it.

Here is the one where i started actually tuning.

I just read the first two pages and im already worn out. LOL. I am confused about the socket. What socket do i need? Why would you need to solder those 5 pins? You never explain that. Lets see if i got this, the 27SF512 Flash Chip is a EEPROM chip that fits in the new socket, then you solder the new socket to your ECM. Correct?

If your wore out in 2 pages you'll never make it. Takes 100 hours of study to start... I have 100 a week for ten years and still learning... must have desire and time, this is no short course.

Moates G2 adapter with 27fs512 chip soldered into your ECM and you now have a chip you can click to erase, click program 1000's of times.. Stock chips need to be removed, sticker taken off and put under UV light to erase. Even then programming is not fool proof and will need many chips.

1. Cable for data log.
2. Burner for chip
3. G2 adapter and chip. http://www.moates.net/g2-memory-adapter-0-60-leg-spacing.html
4. TunerPro RT and pay him the $39. so we keep getting software with 1000 times the abilities of others at that cost a ton more.

Major step in understanding TunerPro and tuning.

I have advanced XDF and ADX files I've put over 100 hours into for the 1227747 $42 I give away free.

Yeah, iv been doing some serious reading and i dont know if im up for this. Could i just get everything, and have someone write a tune for me that i can download? My hats are off to you guys who do this, and i will pay him the $39.00. I wanna keep this going, so any donation i can give to help out i will. I will even pay for my tune if it helps. This just seems like it takes alot of time, and i have none of that. Maybee later down the road when i get a little more settled down i can go back and really pay it some mind. But with me geting out of the service, moving back home, going to school and working. There is no way im gonna have the time for this.

Well yeah but you still need half that equiptment to burn chips and install in the ECM.

If your not going to persue this in future then save money on equiptment.

Find a local tuner to do it hands on. If that can't be found just buy the cable and software to data log. Then work with a tuner who can give you a starter chip, record data for fine tuning and provide feeback for 2nd or third chip. Can usually be done by mailing you a new chip each time.

Problem with these old ECM is the chip is EPROM and UV light erase, not just click erase. Even then it's not 100% and can fail, or if you do it exactly correct still will fail eventually. You can solder in a G2 adapter from Moates with EEPROM/click erase chip that will work 100% 1000's of times.
