i bought an old 1980 PHR engine annual at a yard sale, b/c its full of bbc/sbc build tips/articles & it was a dime(i gave a dollar, but thats a different story). after i got home, while going thru the mag i stubbled upon an article about some new(this is in 1980) sbc heads. they were made in australia by frank duggan. has anyone ever heard of sbc heads made by duggan? heres a page i scanned that has some pics.

if anyone wants to read the article i will post the other pages. its mostly about the new for '80 bbc heads though & it doesnt say very much about the sbc heads by duggan. mostly only captions on the pics. 1 caption says the sbc heads will take 2.125/1.65 valves :eek1:

i think these would be cool. especially if you put vortec injection on it, put the CPI spider on the lifter vally cover. then hide it with another top cover. then the stacks would only control the air & end the tuning headaches of multiple carbs w/same-or even more cool factor.

i bet a homemade intake would be fairly easy to make & could fit regular sbc heads and look all most the same. i'm going to look into this more. any advice about trying it or multi carbs in general?

Looks big time cool. I wish you the best of luck in finding a set. Says they were designed for circle track racers, though. Might be a b**** on the street. Multiple carbs are always cool, but my understanding is they can be a pain in the a** to tune cuz you have to tune say, three or four instead of just one or two. Might want to seriously consider FI over carbs. I'm also curious as to the throttle set up on something with this many carbs positioned where they are. The cool thing about multiple carbs though (say 3 or more) is you can set them up with a progressive linkage. Lets say you have a 3x 2 barrel setup (think Mopar sixpack) when you're just cruising down the highway maybe only one carb will pumping. Mash the gas though and the other two open up delivering more fuel and air to the engine. My old man said growing up his dad had an Olds with a set up like this. He described this situation to me and said mashing on the gas with only the one carb pumping was almost like a shot of nitrous as the other two kicked in.

All factory tri-power, six pack, three dueces what ever you wanna call it, three 2 barrel carbs only has one center carb controlling fast idle, cold idle, choke, etc. The other two front and back carbs are "secondaries" or "dumpers" as the Tri-Power vette guys call them. Essentially when you mash the gas and the rods kick them in they just poor gas in.

As you said individual carbs are a pain in the ass to tune and get right. Old tech is cool but the truth of the matter is that its old. I bet a set of 227 Rac AFRs would make them look like crap even w/ smaller valves.

Yes.

@ Stomis thanks for correcting some of the bad info. I'm really not a hot rod guy and my memory is a little rusty. The setup you described and its functioning is exactly as my old man described it too.

i know multiple carbs are a PIA, that's why i said it may be possible to run those stacks w/cpi spider/vortec injection. i dont see where the fuel comes in to the carbs at all in that pic. it looks like they may be for air control only & something else meters the fuel b/c i dont see any kind of fuel circuits, i see only the shaft for the butterflies..i dont know..but i know its different & that's always cool.

Ive had a car with dual mikuni 44phh's and one with tripple mikuni 44phh's.

F THAT.

Biggest pain in the ass ever. Would never want to mess with em on a v8 haha

I had a motorcycle with 4 carbs - I would sync the carbs with a tool where I would hook up a tube to each carb. The tubes had a bit of mercury in them and the carbs would be balanced when the mercury all lined up.

I wonder if a multi carb setup on a car or truck would be setup the same way?
