I will be replacing the rear axle under my CC SB project soon. I intend on getting the axle this month and having it in by new years. I have a large u-pull-it type yard near by with a LOT of 90's trucks. What years and such should I look for? Can I get the parking brake to hook up? and will I need a different master cylinder to operate the rear discs if it has 'em.

I'll be using the search fuction on here to but figured I'd ask too. Thanks for any info.

Okay Rick here is what I have found, drum brake only. Doesn't matter what year. They did come with several gear ratios including 3.42 3.73 4.10 and probably a couple others I don't know about. It seems that the cables on the later model trucks ( like yours) will hook up to the e brake, but I have not verified that yet. 2wd ones are narrower than 4wd ones. So look for 4wd trucks to get a matching width. If you want the rear to stay a bit narrower than look for 2wd trucks.

As far as discs in the rear go, try it without switching your master, but more than likely it would be a good upgrade to switch the master to something with discs front and rear.

Not much to look for really, lowest miles, best looking one. They are pretty bullet proof in a stock truck.

I have/had an 89 LD (6 lug) K2500 that had a SF 14 bolt rear. My truck had 3.73's which I guess was a common ratio for them. Id plan a gear change if getting one thats 1988 or newer.

I think its more or less chance, as Ive only seen TBI trucks with the SF 14... so from what Ive seen, its 1988-1995... but not to say 96+ trucks didnt have them.

I however dont know about the master cyl, or parking brake that would be ideal for that swap. Maybe a disc conversion would be the best bet.

I have seen them in all the years at the yards, not sure how new but at least 98, since the H2s have an 8 lug SF I assume they used them for quite a while

Damn Eric, you beat me to it.

:D:D

thanks guys:waytogo: I learned a lot reading this thread too. http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=260593

I will be looking around the yard this week sometime. I dont realy know what Gears I currently have, which blows. I get a silly fealing by the butt cheek dyno that I have 4.56's:doah: Which may make this a not gonna happen swap. (dont wanna change gears due to $$$) I'm hoping its 4.10's so I can find a match. I didnt realize the 2wds had the different track width either, thanks Eric. I hope I can find something I can use. My 12b has a LOT of pinion play. Clunks bad when shifting too:confused: Now that theres snow on the ground I need this thing road worthy all the more so I can park the burb:D

after some research I found that I'm looking for option codes GT5(4.10) or HC4(4.56) which I didnt know they had:thumb: I'm just gonna look for 6 lugs and then check the codes first. Way better than trying to fiddle around under the truck in the cold.

I just pulled one from the yard last Sunday so I'll share a little more.

I found two axles that were the narrower width:
1989 K1500, 6 lug, 14SF with 3:73 gears (narrower width)
1993 C2500, 8 lug, 14SF with 4:10 gears (also narrower width)

I took the 6 lug axle shafts (as well as the brake backing plates) from the 1989 and installed them into the 1993 truck. Perfect match.

So, what I'm saying is if you can find the correct ratio 14SF but it was an 8 lug....you could still make it work for a 6 lug configuration if you did a little work in the yard.

Good luck!

I have seen a few 87 and older 4 wheel.drives with the 9.5. I look at diffs in every truck I see driving around.

But not sure if it was conversion or factory. I'm thinking some were factory

some 3/4 tons had them in the mid 80's.

Ive never seen a 1/2 ton square body truck with one that wasnt swapped in though.
