Could you tell me approx what year this truck is? Owner has a carpet dash cover so I can't get a VIN #. This this is in very nice condition and I don't think it has moved in months. Left a note to see if he wanted to sell and heard nothing. Would like to make a run at it this year if I can find the funds. Let me know what you think the year might be please.

Good looking truck! I would have to guess around '80, since it has the early frontend and a fuel door on the bed. It could be earlier and had the bed switched also. I was wondering if you could search the lic plate number and get some info.:dunno:

assuming it has the correct front end its a 79 or 80. The round headlights with the markers in the "headlight door" like that were only produced in those 2 years, IIRC.

beat me to it!:D

One way to positively identify it being either a 79 or an 80 would be to take a look at the t-case. If it is a 203, its a 79, if it is a 205, its an 80.

Beautiful truck regardless!

If it's a 4spd wouldn't it only be a 205?

that is an 79, you can tell by the all chrome headlight bezels and full circle headlights where 80 has the same bezels w/ square headlights.

Some '80s had round headlights also.

Is this specific truck in the pics a Silverado? If it is, its a '79 with those round lights. A Scottsdale will be the same also.

I appreciate the info fellas, had hope of it being a smog exempt pre '76. Still, if I get the funds I may try to get it sometime this year. Or if any of you guys would be interested maybe there is some way to get a hold of the owner to see if he would sell. Like I said, I don't think it has moved at all in months and would think I would have seen it driving around town in that time frame, but nothing.

just did a check on the license plate and its a 79 and last passed smog in june of 07.

What does a emission test on a 1979 K30 consist of? I have a 79 K30 I just bought and it has factory dual exhaust. So what pcv, egr?

some of the other guys could explain it better than I but here in Calif any truck '76 and newer are required to pass a smog test. Typical nazi/Calif govt BS. 4x4high would probably hve details.

I just wondered what they could be testing for. I understand nox and such but it really should bearly have anything to change smog. I guess if your cam is too big and such but most guys have rv cams in there trucks.

they test for hydrocarbons, nox, and co. The have a minimum and a maximum number for each category. If its a k30, it will be a 77 and newer anyways so they all have to pass smog in Cali unless its a diesel. Out of cali vehicles are on a federal smog program and it varies state to state on the different requirements.

i hear alot of people mention using rv cams, do you think they are better than comp cams extreme energy series cams? i run a 268 comp cams xtreme energy in most my 4x4's b/c they have a pretty rough idle, but make alot of tq. which is kinda hard to get a lumpy idle w/alot of lowend power.

in my 2wd's i ussually run lunati's 284 bracket master cam, i once used the same lunati cam in a 383 w/10:1 compression in a truck that ran a timed mud run, but 1 of those 2 cams ussualy wind up in just about every one of my rebuilds, along w/p.a.w.'s piston specials($120 a set, advertised as cast 11:1 compression w/64cc head, i run 76cc heads, which should drop it to 10:1) sorry for the hijack, but i saw the rv cam mentioned and thought i'd ask about them and seems your question has a true answer, i wish arkansas had a place where a citizen could look up tag #'s, does that cali site give you the owners name? i've seen vehicles that i would like to know about and a site like that would be nice....

i think the 355 i'm putting together now is going to get the comp cam 268 xtreme energy, but i'm going to see if they will custom grind me 1 w/the 4/7 swap and try it out. again sorry for hijack

no owners name, but its cool to find out if your rig was a smog nightmare in the past. It also tells you the year and i find that useful. Also tells you what city the rig was smogged in, the vehicle above was in San Diego, then Encinitas, then Costa Mesa since 04.

I just called it a rv cam it is really a very small cam. Speed pro 204 214 490 510 lift. Done by 4500-5000 ( have yet to chassis dyno it) I think a truck shouldn't have more than 8.5-9 to 1 compression to prevent detonation and allow it to pull right off of idle and work with the stock converter. These cams work best with lower compression. My truck has a 454 with 7.9 to 1 compression, peanut ports, speed pro cam, ls7 corvette pan (too keep oil on hills) and a street warrior intake. It pulls hard right off idle and idles smooth. My K10s 350 has a super small hyd roller cam and 9 to 1 making 300hp and 400lbs of torque. I went 299ft pulling a 36k sled before breaking 1/2 the teeth off the rear 10 bolt. It was keeping up with all the hot bbc k30s in the stock class.

I do understand how to build a hot engine (my camaros 427 makes 660hp), I just think the way I use my trucks the pistons would be in the oil pan by now with more compression. I like to keep cylinder pressure with my camshaft timing and keep the compression lower.

Not to pick on you but I wouldn't waste my money on a 4/7 swap it won't add enough hp to worry about. I would spend your extra money on good heads. Heads are the biggest and best way to make horsepower.
