Is there a casting # list for these engines somewhere? I got one free from a guy at work, says its a recent rebuild, early '80s-ish...... are they numbered like the SBCs?

Thanks

Not that I know of. There were only 2 different 6.2 castings; most would be 14022660. In the last couple years (92-93) the block used was casting # 10149599. These are the blocks with one-piece rear main seals and cylinder walls thick enough to be bored to 6.5 size. I don't know of any other casting numbers which give other info about a given block, other than the Julian date of course. Even with that I don't know of a list that spells out changes during a castings production lifespan. For example, the later 660 blocks were supposedly machined to have thicker main webs than earlier ones, but I don't know when that was begun. I know my 1991 660 block's webs are so thick that there is maybe only .020 between the webs and the crank counterweights - it is TIGHT. The 82's were supposedly a higher nickel block, but I have not found any proof to suggest that GM ever changed the iron formulation.

What are you planning to do with it?

Ah the dude queefed out on me. It was going to be a freebie but apparently he sent it all to the wrecker. Ya it was a kid I work with too.

What a goomba...make his life a misery Luke. ;)
