Is it aluminum or cast iron?

Looks iron to me.

its cast, I found it with some SBC exhaust manifolds and an oil pan with some carnage holes in it in a scrap pile. I don't have any other info, but it looked like it may be useful for something so I picked it up.

looks like an I6 bolt pattern on the back though. as all of the lower bolts are internal not external like the v8s.

I'm betting Dorian or Scott will chime in and let you know what they think.

That looks really old...like "stovebolt circa 1940's" old. :eek1:

I'm not sure what it is, but from experience, its no I6 bell housing. At least not from 68 on. The earliest I6 I've had any dealings with was a 250 from a 68 Chevy C10. We pulled it and bolted a 307 right back in its place.

you know.......you might be on to something there. theres a guy up the street, with a '48 caddillac, and 2 '55 chevys. He might have turfed some stuff......I dunno.

Keep us posted, you got my curiostiy going now. ;)

for sure........it looked to be in good shape and free so i took it. But right off the bat I knew enough to know i didn't know what it really was :D

but...might be useful at some time. Kind of why I have soooo much crap in my garage i can bearly fit the Z-28 in and thats it :eek1:

That is a cast iron bell housing from a 216 and/or 235 GM that was used from the 1930's until about 1959. It also appears to be out of a car since it doesn't have the angled mounts for the crossmember like the trucks used.

A very quick search and this is what i found. That particular casting number is a 1954 vintage.

3836435, cast iron, 11",10.5, side mounts, small trans, car bell, 1954

Thanks! I plugged that # into a couple online GM parts pages.......nothing ever came up for that #.
