Normal 350, 3970010 blocks are really common and were used in 302s and large journal 327s also.

The casting number looks a bit odd, but probably 3970010.
V is a flint produced engine...01 is January....9 is 9th day of Jan. after that it looks like a crate/counter engine p/n 9800.

The way the numbers are not in line with each other, and the depth of the numbers says to me that it was stamped by hand in two or more different stamping attempts.

Is there a way to find out the exact year or if its the 327?

Is it a driver or passenger side dipstick? The casting number "3970010" is a 350 block and by the width of the machined pad in front of the passenger side cylinder head it is a later block like 79ish-up.

I'm with zim on that number looking hand stamped. Looks like a reman tag on the cylinder head right above it also.

there should be a date casting on the bellhousing flange..a 3 or 4 digit number and letter cast into the block...the bore is the same on the 327/350, crank stroke would make the difference.

the pic below shows my 327/365 block...the date code is D 6 4...showing D for april, 6 for 6th day of the month, and 4 for the year.
the block stamping shows FO4I8R...showing F for flint assembly plant, O4 for the month of April, I8 for 18th day of the month, and R which is the designation for the application of the engine.

He noted a drivers side dipstick.

Okay, I will check what code I have there. Thanks for the info. Is having a 68 327 a good thing? And my brother did say this block was a newly rebuilt GM crate motor that cost the guy $2800 bucks. I got most of the stuff off the other motor and put it on this one so the transplant is underway:D
