While you have the cover off you can inspect the gears and bearings for rust or damage and make sure it rotates freely like it should /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Identify this axle!!

Okay, they should be real easy to turn, if not there bad right? One more thing, where abouts do I move the spring perches to? Thanks

Often the brake shoes will be caked in dirt and crud and not allow the diff to turn freely, you will have to remove the brake drums and clean out the crud if that is the case. Otherwise, yes everything should move freely, you can visibly see the rust too. A little on the gears probably isnt going to hurt anything but the bearings shouldnt have any. You'll have to measure your springs from outside edge to outside edge to see where to weld the perches on. Just first check out the diff to make sure its usable /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Identify this axle!!

Okay thanks /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

OH I almost forgot, is this a 3/4 ton or 1 ton? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Identify this axle!!

Its a 3/4 ton axle, a one ton would have used a full floater /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Identify this axle!!

I took the diff cover off and found these numbers inside on the gears :
1 3 80 DANA D 32503 B3R31 46-13

What do these numbers mean? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Identify this axle!!

Re: Identify this axle!!

January 3 1980, 46 ring gear teeth divided by 13 pinion gear teeth = 3.54 ratio. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Identify this axle!!

Okay thanks, from my smartness... 3.54 wouldn't be good gearing for 35"'s would it? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Identify this axle!!

Not a good gear for 35's, but what trans do you have? If you are running anything other than a 700R4 I would go with 4.10' probably, but if you have a 700R4 I would go with 4.88 or 5.13's. I currently have 4.56's with 35's and wish I had went with 4.88 or 5.13's. I am not about to go from 4.56 to 4.88 so when I do decide to make a gear swap it will be 5.13's.

Re: Identify this axle!!

I am running the manual SM465. Would I be able to swap 4.10's into the place of the other gears, or what do I have to do... thanks /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Identify this axle!!

4.10's will swap onto the existing carrier. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Identify this axle!!

For my last question... how hard is it to swap gears? Is it something I can do if I haven't done it before? And where can I buy the gears from? Link if possible?

Re: Identify this axle!!

you should get a 14ff and sell that axle
a 14ff is $100, just bought one last month for $100cdn
there is no reason to spend money to run an inferior axle when a $100one will bolt in

I agree, since it doesnt have the gears you need it wouldnt be worth buying new gears when you can find a 14FF with 4.10's for $100. I bought two 14FF with 4.10s last year, they are everywhere.

Re: Identify this axle!!

I agree with the others, don't spend any money on this axle if the gears aren't what you want. 14FF can be had for 100.00-150.00 with the gears you want. Just find one with an open carrier so you can add a detroit later if you want. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Identify this axle!!

I've been looking in the paper for the last 6 months and no 14bffs came up /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
