ID\'ing the 14 bolt detroit locker

Is there an easy way to tell if a 14b has a detroit with the diff cover off? The axle is not in a truck. I am looking to buy a 14b DL to put in my Eaton and run 14b axleshafts. My Eaton has an OEM DL, and you can easily see it thru holes in the carrier. This 14 bolt carrier does not seem to have any, and I am largely unfamiliar with it, so pardon the stupid newb question.
I will try to post pics of it, can anyone help?

Re: ID\'ing the 14 bolt detroit locker

It looks like it could be a DL. It should have 4 cross pin holes, if it is. If it has 3 then it's a Gov-lock.

Re: ID\'ing the 14 bolt detroit locker

Looks like a gov-lock to me /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif The carriers is how you can tell as mentioned above three crosspin holes=gov-lock 4 crosspin holes= Detroit.

This pic the spacing looks to be 3 holes the side of it also looks like a GL carrier /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: ID\'ing the 14 bolt detroit locker

Thanks for the input, at least I havent bought it yet, and 14 bolt lockers are cheap. Maybe I should try to trade my Eaton's for one /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

3 does equal gov-loc...4 equals open diff...OR POSSIBLY detroit...easiest way to tell for a detroit is spin the tires and listen to see if it makes a ratcheting sound...but that is deffinently a gov-loc /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Re: ID\'ing the 14 bolt detroit locker

When yall say sross pins holes are yall talking about those circles that are on the outside of the ring gear??

Re: ID\'ing the 14 bolt detroit locker

Does the open carrier have any cross pins??

Re: ID\'ing the 14 bolt detroit locker

open has 4 crosspins /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif u cnat really tell a detroit just by looking at it, cuz the detroit drops in, and replaces the spiders...and since 14bolts are sealed up, ya cant see the spiders...so one with a detroit will look like an open diff...only way to really tell is to spin one tire and listen for a ratcheting sound /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: ID\'ing the 14 bolt detroit locker

It's hard to see from the pics...

Do both axles lock-up???

But...since the detroit replaces the spiders...
I'd look for the spiders...thru the carrier access holes..

If you see a spring...that's probably a detroit..

Also...a detroit creates back-lash...almost a 1/4 turn...
when turning the pinion...

I'll second that. The diff in that pic is definately a Gov-Loc. /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif

Re: ID\'ing the 14 bolt detroit locker

I second what Jerry(JK5) said. Look at the carrier and see if the opening are there for the spiders. If you see spider gears, it's open, if the holes are there but you see something other than gears, DL. If there are no openings, its more than likely a Gov-Loc and I think the pic you posted is a gov-loc...

Re: ID\'ing the 14 bolt detroit locker

I agree with JK5 too, if you can see a spring in there that tightens up when the axle locks its most definetely a OEM Detroit.. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: ID\'ing the 14 bolt detroit locker

Thats what I was wondering...on my Eaton axle, I can see the Detroit through the carrier...there are no holes in this one except for the crosspin holes.

It's a gov-lock. /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif

Re: ID\'ing the 14 bolt detroit locker

Has anyone ever broke a gov-lok in a 14ff?

Re: ID\'ing the 14 bolt detroit locker

Gov-Lock is probably the most frequently replaced part in GM rear axles.

Here is a pic of my open-carrier/Detroit locker set up...

Hopefully these pics might help a little bit /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Not that I know of...but a Gov-lok doesn't work that well, either.
