i plan on running regular gauges not idiot lights, i was just going to put my new sensor in the port right next to the dizzy on my 86 350 because i cant get the screw out of the oil filter part of the block

my question is if i just unplug the idiot light oil pressure sensor plug and tape it out of the way, with that make the light stay on all the time as a open circuit?

No, GM uses grounds to activate everything. If you pulled the wire off and grounded it the gauge would peg full right. You're going to need to plug that wire onto the gauge sender anyways unless you're going to go with a mechanical oil pressure gauge. You didn't specify if you're going with factory gauges or aftermarket.

i went with a mechanical gauge, so if im running idiot lights instead of actual gauges instead of pegging all the way over it would just light up if i grounded it out right? but since i just unplugged it and tied the plug up and out of the way i shouldnt have any problems right?

That is correct. Unless you ground the wire the light won't come on.
