Here I go again. I fix one thing just so 1 (or more) problems can crop up. I swear, the gremlins in my Jimmy must all be waiting in line.

Anyway, FrankenJimmy is an '82 with the 6.2 and the 700R4 auto. Over the recent cold snap (-15* for daytime high; Al Gore can suck it) it didn't want to play. I recently (before the snap) bypassed the Glow Plug controller, and that was working fine. Thinking that I might have burned out a glow plug or 8 trying to get it to start, I replaced the Bosch plugs (that weren't that old) with AC 60s. No go.

I checked my fuel filter and for some reason it was empty. I filled it up, put it back on and after a while (and a gasoline-soaked rag) it fired up. Okay.

New problem: it's idling way too high. I don't have a tach, but I'd say that it's running, when good and warm, at ~950 rpm. Before turning in for the night I fired it up, just to make sure.

As it started to get warm, say 5 minutes into it, the idle went way, way up. I'd say 2000 RPM easy.

I know there's a solenoid that controls idle and it's adjustable. So, first, am I guessing right on this? Second, where is it? Last, how do I adjust it?

Thanks

Have you put any anti gel in your fuel? Not totally related but your fuel filter was probably empty cause your fuel gelled. Last week the fuel in my F250 power stroke did, and what a pain that was. try getting some Power Service in the white bottle or Howe's fuel conditioner and anti gel (oreilys has it) in and get it mixed in with the fuel and thru all the lines. Not sure it will fix your idle but gelled fuel will mess with your engine. I think our winter blend is a little weak, and from talking to some other oil burners in town there were a bunch with gel issues.

Almost sounds like you were about to have a "runaway" situation, diesels can run on their own crankcase fumes or oil that gets into the combustion chamber...if you have any blowby those fumes can cause it to rev up all by itself, and make it diffucult or impossible to shut the engine down with the key..I doubt the idle solenoid is the problem ,it might be the injector pump or fuel issues as suggested...

Appreciate the Input

It has anti-gel, but it was SO bloody cold last here week that it may have just been too much cold or too little anti-gel. It probably has too much (possible?) now, plus some SeaFoam.

Per the other, how do I diagnose if the higher idle speed is from crankcase fumes? Important to note that it wasn't doing this before the cold soak. The Injector Pump is a new unit that has less than 3000 miles of use.
