a leak, down the back of the engine. possibly looking like its coming from the rear main seal. could actually be the rear main seal too, i've actually seen the cam plug or the oil galley plugs leak too.

A distributor is supposed to have an O-ring?

Well that explains a lot...

Actually, I've always seen a round paper gasket between the dizzy and the intake.

I've never seen an o-ring on a factory dizzy, ever, well at least pre-90... standard gasket materials..
