If someone figures this one out I'll be blown away...

I would check the ground, adding an additional ground strap could solve these issues. Also check how that brake controller, and rear trailer connector wiring. Until I fixed the bad ground in the rear every time I was towing something and hit the brakes while the cruise was on it would blow the brake lights, and then the cruise would speed up... Crazy I know! All caused by a bad ground.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys...

Tonight after work I fired the truck up and wouldn't you know it, everything works fine. :)
But I know it'll only last a day or so and it'll be back to the way it was... I think you all are on the right track with the grounds, it could explain why it goes in and out. The trailer wiring harness is a disaster... it's the "T" style that taps into the rear wiring harness so maybe I'll unplug it all and run it for a while to see if my problem goes away permanently and if so I guess it's that...

If nothing works I'll try the multi-function switch.

bad grounds seems to be a common culprit. I tried for days to figure out why none of my traffic signals worked correctly. Ended up being a combination of bad grounds and bad bulbs. glad i didn't order that new wiring harness...:doah:

might be able to help ya out on that one, i have a switch off of a 95 1500 that was mistakenly place.

dont know if work for its the same one but might work for ya

If I end up having to replace it I'll chat with ya'.

i had this similar problem with mine when i bought it.it had a bad ground to the dash harness.so the blinkers would flash the dash lights when off.then when on would work.but flash really slow.added a new ground wire to the dash cluster and it all went away.grounds can do some funny things when the power doesnt have a solid connection to complete the circuit.

I also vote for the multifunction switch and dash ground my dads 95 3500 had the same problems. A friend who is a mechanic at the local GMC dealer (and possibly the best mechanic I know) heloped us with this one and informed us it a bad ground in the dash that causes them to burn out. run a good ground to the tubular support in the dash. Its easy to see this bar if you take the glove box out.

THis is also a common problem that causes radio noise in aftermarket sterios.

I know the tube you're talking about... where did you guys tie into the dash harness?

I never have I just ran a 10g wire from the small ground on the fender near the batt to that tube. Im pretty sure the stock harness ties into that somewhere already.

WAIT im wrong lol I always tie the sterio harness to that tube as well so maybe thats how its getting to the stock harness. I do know my dash lights and stuff work better after that.

most deffinately your multi function switch. just like when a turn sigle switch causes tail lights to not work. i would bet 100 smackers thats your problem. i look forward to seeing what you end up doing ;) good luck!

i dont have a mutltifuntion switch as mine is a 72,but i kow what bad grounds can do to a entire electrical system is not wired properly.i was a gen mechanic in the army and seen what bad wiring that operators can do.starts fires, burn out entire circuits in whatever they are hooking to,or just generally not running properly.same thing applys to vehicles.i had to rewire half of my truck when i got it because of the half assed wiring the p.o. did.grounds are easy to replace.a couple extra ones added and tightness of the ones you have goes a long way to make everything electrical run properly.as for where i hooked my extras up.i put a new ground strap from the engine to the firewall.then added a new ground into the wiring from the dash guage harness to the firewall.then my guages worked much better and also added a better ground for to lighten up my dash lights better.sounds like either bad bulbs, multifunction switch,or a bad ground.2 of them are cheap to check.the multifunction swicth being the only expensive piece.and a lot harder to get to.make sure to check all your wiring connections are clean and not rusted or corroded also.just having dirty battery terminals will cause a loss in power.

* a bad light bulb would cause fast flashing and possibly other lights on that circuit to appear "bad" a bad ground would cause them to be dim or also cause fast flasher operation. as for a bad ground from engine to frame or frame to body? i wouldnt be too worried unless you had drivability issues. basicly the problem your explaining should be diagnosed in a few minutes by a qualified tech. (no offense) if you have a friend or know someone that has proper test equipment such as a "power probe 2" then you could easily grab each bulb and test for power and ground integrity unless someone that is un-experienced has done any wiring i.e. stereo/tach/gauges/column/etc and as long as you have never had an electrical fire or severed wires?? then like i said i would bet good money on your multi function switch. p.s. they are very cheap around $20.00 new and can be installed in less then a half hour. good luck and happy head scratching! ;)

It's still working and the only thing I've done is yank all my wires out that I had zip tied up in the rear harness for the trailer/brake lights and let them go free...
Maybe I have a bad connection in there... I have a break from school tomorrow so I'll go through it then.
