if u were going to rebiuld a 305..what would you do?

[ QUOTE ]
. I know people that have spent a fair amount of money and time on small CID GM V8's, but it's a lot of money for not nearly as much gain as someone see's with a 350+ CID motor.

I totally agree, get as many cubes as you can get because that is the key to a lot of power. That is the main reason I wen't with a 400 and I almost made it a 434ci SB /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gifwith a 4" crank but couldn't afford it at the last minute. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

hmm well i guess ill think about it..im still ganan take the thing to school and rebiuld it though....cause there looking for anything there..

CarCraft magazine in 1999 decided to see what would happen if they did the same type bolt-on's they did to the standard GMGoodwrench 350. They were able to squeeze 325HP out of it. Heres the writeup
325HP305

Do a search in Google for 305 buildup and check out the dofferent links. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Ok guys, I know everyone likes to bash 305's but really come on! They aren't that bad! I did the same thing he did I rebuilt a 305 mostly stock with intentions of selling it. Of course when you're done there is no way you'll get anything close to what you've put into it so I decided the best way to go would be to put it in a vehicle. I bought a blazer with a 305 that was in pretty rough shape and transplanted. Its not a power monster or anything but I did learn a hell of a lot! If you're going to want lots of power down the road, I definately agree; get a 350-400 but the 305 is just fine if all you want to do is rebuild/learn. Go 4 it.

This Is what I would do a stock rebuild on the engine maby get a set of vortec heads from a 350 or a set of the alumminam vet heads price is abought the same for used sets an edlbrock manifold and carb headers and for a cam I would use if its a roller then use the 150 came kit from summit if its hydrolic then you can get cam kits all day long for 75 from summit PW and a few other places that way if some day you decide to build a 350 almost every thing you put in to the 305 can be used on the 350 if your doing this at school and they have the hones and a way to turn the crank you shouldnt have much more then 250 to 350 in to the short block when done and if you reuse the cam in the 350 less then that so if you drive on it for a year it will have paid for its self so you wont lose any thing buy building the 305 but will have gained the experiance of building a engine my first engine was a 305 I just wanted to try and put one together so I could drive my firebird and after 100 miles it had a bad nock I had nicked the crank with a rod bolt when I was puting it together so it spun a rod baring lessen lernd I havent done that again. If that would have been the engine that in the fire bird now I would have cried for a week but with the 305 I had to spend like 50 to get the cranke fixed and 25 on new berings so it didnt bother me to much.

thanx for the advise guys!! im pretty exctited about rebiulding it..learning is all i really wanna do and i might put the engine in something after im done just to drive it and say that i rebiult it myself..might be able ot find a cheap firebird or something that needs an engine ...

i got a 400 up in canada 4 sale....... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/pimp1.gif i did have a 305 in my first truck and it wasent the best but it took alot had like 370 000 km on it when i hit that pole, good engen for a stocker my 2cents /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

seen something once for race cars where they use a new 283 crank in a 305 with flattops and stock rods and they run something like 7000-8000RPM on those motors.

A 283 crank in a 305 block would net you 267 CID, which is a step in the wrong direction. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif Besides the 283 crank is a small journal and the 305's is large. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

why cuase it takes up space or CI's? and...journal!!??

It would be silly IMO to decrease the CID of an already small under powered engine. The already small bore of the 305 would dramatically decrease breathing abilty, (bore and valve size) prohibiting the high RPMs that a decreased stroke might get you. GM did produce 267's in the late 70's and they are worse than 305's.

1967 and earlier engines used crankshafts with 2.30" DIA main journals and 2.00" DIA rod journals. Crankshafts for 1968 and later SBC's (except the 400) use a 2.45" DIA main journals and 2.10" DIA rod journals. 400's use a 2.65" DIA main and 2.10" DIA rod journal. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

PLEASE do not disrespect a 'real' Firebird with a too small CHEVY motor !!!!

Go ahead and rebuild that 305 and put it into whatever you want. You will be prouder of your work if it goes into something lighter, like a lawn mower. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

A 305 is alright in the RIGHT application....

Might be something interesting to look into. Probley wouldn't have great torque but hell if your somewhat idling at 3500RPM so what /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

[/ QUOTE ]That would be a 283 crank in a 327. It's what the factory did in 1969 to make the Chevy 302. They tore up the tracks in the Z28 Camaros.

I knew it was something like that! I never claimed to know ANYTHING about motors! /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif
