If you live in Colorado don't use a 454 Vortec to tow...

I don't see how you can compare how an engine pulls on foothills vs. a REAL mountain pass...you really can't.

I realize that.....but my hopes are to make a trip out west with the Blazer sometime in the next couple of years and want to know what I will be getting in to while towing through the mountains.

Saying what the semi's do on this pass is a good example. Who else on this board has driven over the pass? What vehicle, were you towing, and what speeds could you pull it????

Most of the Mountain passes are 11,000 feet or more and run 6 and 7% grades.
I have a Ford F 250 with 35" tires 4:10 gearing Auto trans and a 460 with headers and gutted cat. I am usually at around 25 to 30 miles an hour on these passes with a trailer weighing 6500# with buggy on it. I also have around 1000# of other stuff with me. Oh and my truck weighs over 7200# empty! So thats 14,700# plus with a 460.
The passes aren't that bad to pull you just have to remember to back out of it and take some time.

i have been out on those passes, i have never towed any thing and i was driving just cars, but i can tell you this, they are not like driving in hills at all. One time when I was in college, I went out there to ski I had a old honda with 200+k and i had a friend driving behind me with the same car (87 Accord) mine was a stick and his was an Auto, it was all he could do to keep up with me and i think the most i was doing was 45 or so. A different time i was driving a mid size GM with a auto and it was a PAIN IN THE REAR come back down the mountains just before denver. + there is some place where the wind comes down a cannon and on a windy day it feels like you have 2 flat on one side you car can pull so hard. I am kind of shocked that Steve’s sub had that kind of problems towing but from what I recall I would not want to go much faster then 35 or so with a trailer in that area that he is talking about.

What gear is the diff?

Uhhhhhhh. My new trail rig will shave 3+ k off my towed load partly because of this exact issue. My truck on a 10k trailer is pushing 9K. Its a hell of a lot of weight especially in thin air. I doubt your much lighter. My truck has no problem with the new rig. I have already pull that weight a few times but I agree...my next rig will be a Diesel. Proably be a SDF25 Crew short 4x4 with the 7.3 PSD. My buddy gets nearly 21 empty and pulling his 39ft 5th toy hauler camper with 4 ATVs in it going from here to Alaska he was hitting 15mpg. I still need to drive the Dodges. The back seat doesn't look nearly as well done as the F250 SD.

Now I do get Employee discount (moms retired Chrysler) so I could probaby get a new Dodge for what a 2-3 year of F250 will set me back. If they can get a decent back seat that will change my mind but a pair of uncomforatable kids on a 1400 mile trip makes everybody miserable. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Definitely get a 1 ton if you get a crew cab.

A 3/4 ton crewcab is not going to have much GVWR left once you factor in the weight of all that extra cab and interior. SRW is fine--but definitely get a 1 ton.

Re: If you live in Colorado don\'t use a 454 Vortec to tow...

the passes around here a hell on any truck that the doesnt have a turbo, my 1988 blazer 6.2 with j-code intake, 2 1/2 exhaust and 80% less restriction mufflers, also 3 inch pvcp pipe intake ran to the grill, usually ends up down around 40 to 50 mphs or so going up I-70 leaving denver, without a turbo you just bog down. I would be really interested in seeing how that new 6.5na swanger diesel would do up those passes.
