I got a 2001 Chevy 1500hd and eventually want to make it more off roadish. I'd eventually like to put front lockers on it, what do you guys recommend?

I don't think they have a locker for the front end. What size tires you wanting to put on there?

yea you can get an e-locker for the 9.25 front diff... should you get one? prolly not. youd go through CVs like nobodies business

When you say "locker", many people think about a locker for the differential, like a limited slip only more absolute.

But you said "locking hubs", meaning a selectable dial for each wheel.

I didn't know such things were available for IFS trucks. I thought the hubs were always locked and the front driveshaft was disconnected?

the E locker mentioned would give you the control you want, no locking hubs for the front are offered though.

have you considered a sas swap or is this a driver ??

if so read here.. While I dont have their kit, i can say the radius arms from it that I do have are pure quality and beef. The kit is around 2600.00 or so, plus getting your drive shaft done, the front axle and exhaust.

Are you talking about a locking differential in the front, or locking hubs? The title says locking hubs, but then you ask about "lockers" and making the truck better off-road. This leads me to think a locking differential because locking (selectable) hubs do absolutely nothing for off-road ability.

As already mentioned there are no locking (selectable) hubs available for this truck, and I really don't see how you could even make a set work without extensive modifications. It's not IFS in general that precludes locking hubs, but the particuliar design that most trucks including GMs use.

You are lucky you asked that question here and not on some of the other sites out there.... As a tip, try google first and then bring the question to the table with links to examples so people know you tried and can confirm or correct what you have found. Good luck :)

Ok, first off sorry for all the confusion. Your right i should have googled first.:o From what i understand when the vehicle is in four wheel drive and meets a lack of traction, it directs power to the wheel with the least amount of resistance. The result is the wheel on the traction-less surface spins free, while the opposite wheel on the better traction surface provides little or no power. I just want to make it so they both can be putting power to the ground. I think i would be looking for a limited slip for the front? As for tires, not sure but probably going to be around 30" to 32" and it is a truck that gets driven on a regular basis. Just want some opinions on what to get, if i should even get/do anything to it? Sorry and thanks  ( About the locking hubs, i don't know what i was thinking :doah:)

For a stock-ish truck, I think you'd be better off doing some variety of traction control in the back, and leaving the front open. By the time you need a locker up front, you're also gonna want more suspension and/or bigger tires.

But yeah, you've got the idea dead on.
