Is there a site that'll decode a VIN number that you don't have to pay for?

All I bothered to write down was the first 11 since the rest is just junk anyway. I'm mostly interested in what motor it has. It appears to be a 96up standard cab stepside.

OK, so it seems that it's a 1996 shortbox standard cab with a L31 Vortec 350.

It's got an auto so it'll be a 4L60e.

Got any guesses as to what it'll have for gears? This truck would be my new daily driver. After finding out the next generation of GM pickups might have a solid axle I'm not going to buy a brand new truck. I'd rather "wait and see".

The exhaust system is scary under there. It's new after the muffler.

The rear brake line is new as well.

Anything else I should watch out for?

Probably has 3.42 gears, my 98 regular cab short bed does. Exhaust is true dual back to the muffler. Im sure you know but watch out for intake leaks and if it hasnt happened be prepared to fix that and the fuel pump when they die at some point. Check the stearing components for wear. Other than that they are great trucks, those motors run great.
