I have a 84 shortbox that wont start unless I pull start it. My truck was fine until one day it wouldn't turn over anymore, like the battery was dead, it wouldnt even click, and it wouldn't start with jumper cables or by crossing the soliniod w/a screwdriver. So today I put a new battery in it and still nothing. Now I started playing w/my steering column because it is loose at the tilt area and nothing worked. I hten decided to hook jumper cables from the solinoid to the batt. pos. in hopes that the engine would turn over, it didn't, but noticed that the key alarm got louder when the cables were attatched. I left the cables hooked to the solinoid and turned the key and the engine turned over. Does anybody know what the problem is? I'm thinking it is the ignition box that is half way down the steering column that is actuated by the key switch. any suggestions?

It sounds like you need to replace the pos cable on your batt. It's either corroded or is shorted to gnd somewhere.

Yeah, sounds like that to me from what you're saying with the jumper.
