Where can i buy the linkage that runs from your key cylinder down to the switch that is held on the column by 2 bolts? One end has like a gear on it and the other just has a 90 bend with about a 1/4 of the wire. I can not see this part on lmctruck website. Any other place you can think to look? What must you do to pull the ignition switch key part out?

Thanks Ronny

Pictures?

I think the one is what GM calls "Rack, w/rod, ign sw actr", (GM part #'s AT: 7843368 or MT: 7843510) but I can't find (nor think) of the other piece you are talking about.

They show one that is connected to the very end of the ignition switch? "Sector, Ign Sw actr" (7812526)

That is the part that i could not find. The other part i need is just the key switch since a previous owner did not leave the key even though that rod broke where the rack connects to it. I had a 73 that done the same as this 79 did. So i guess this will be an item that must be got at the dealer. Thanks

You can either get it at the dealer, or much easier, grab another column and swap it out.

As for swapping the lock cylinder, as it sounds like you are asking about, there is a small phillips screw that holds the cylinder in. Remove the screw, pull the cylinder out, pop the new one in, and replace the screw. These are readily available from most parts stores.

Dealing with the rod and getting it down through everything can be a pain, but with a bit of patience it can be done. However, when that rod is the issue it is usually easier to just replace the column, since it is just a couple of connectors and the linkage for the trans if it is auto, and then a few bolts. Another option would be to find a junkyard column and pull the part you need out, then put it into your truck. The advantage here is you get to see exactly how it all comes apart, which will make it easier to put into your truck.

I replaced this linkage on a 73 with 3 on the tree and it were not much of a problem. This with an auto may be more but i got patience and time compared to the extra couple dollars to take it out. I might get one from the yard since i need to look for a 203 differential since the cheap parttime kit someone put in my years ago gave it up. Seems like someone near here would of made a doubler and want the back half of a 203 out of thier yard. Just on going with this truck. Next will be a four speed truck for me.
