I searched the forums for opinions on ignition parts, seems like there really is no sure winner.

What about coils? Is an aftermarket coil going to be an improvment over the GM stock unit? Is it worth dropping the coin?

If your truck still has a points and condensor distributor get it swapped out for an HEI unit (I can't remember when GM went to HEI). You really can't go wrong with an HEI especially if the motor is still stock or even slightly modified. :D

It is HEI, but I'm not certain whether an aftermarket coil is an upgrade or worthless money spent.

I've never tried to upgrade ignitions yet, other than switching a points dizzy over to an HEI. The HEI is a really good system though. I do know that if you want to upgrade your ignition system you better do the whole thing otherwise you won't notice much of a difference.

I'm running a msd 6al and a aftermarket Accel coil for the HEI. Really strong. Plus run 8mm wires with good looms. This will be more ignition than anyone need unless you are running mud draggs and turning 8000 rpm!
