I'm a virgin... Help!!!!

That's right, I've never really wheeled anything other than fooling around in The snow... Sorry, I couldn't resist the title. So, the question is this, I have a stock '91 Blazer with 31" uniroyal laredos and I'm thinking of tagging along with some locals to Rausch Creek Offroad Park here in Pa. What would you do to prepare for a trip and am I nuts for even thinking about going in a stock truck with basically all season street tires on it??? I'm not planning on doing anything crazy, I just wanted to go and check it out and see if it's something I'd like to do in the future, and I'm at the point in rebuilding my blazer that I'm trying to decide going the strictly stock route or do I begin modifying it? I don't see the point in altering the suspension if I never planning using it. What advice would you give a guy, I've been working on cars for 20 years, but I only ever tried to make them go faster...
 
Things like a fullsize spare, shovel, highlift, spare tools, good flashlight, and a tarp to lay on are all items that can be of daily use just in case and not just wheeling only stuff.

O and a fire extinguisher too.
 
With a stock suspension and all season tires you would probably be pretty limited on the trails you could wheel on. Especially if the people you are with have lifts and bigger tires.

Depends though. Maybe hes going with some jeep guys that think theyre 32in ATs are some beast ass huge tires lol.
 
Haha, that's pretty much all we have around here, stock jeeps with bfg all terrains, I live in the city surrounded by development after development of McMansions, and the only place I know of locally is sure bet to get the cops called on you. Rausch's website shows lots of green/easy trails, my main concern is I don't want to spend the day stuck and in everyone elses way... Most of the guys I know actually run Toyota pickups, but they have serious k5 envy!!!

That being said I think you'll be surprised the places that the wheelbase, track width, and weight will actually benefit you.
 
We all got started somewhere. I've never been to RC but I'm sure they have stocker trails for your rig. If you go, make sure your truck is mechanically up for it. Sounds like you work on cars so I won't go into details there. You will be surprised at the capabilities of your truck in stock form even with street treads on the tires. And keep in mind, the obstacles you face now will only get easier when/if you decide to build it bigger later. Be prepared for trees to brush down the side of the truck at the very least, and rocks to leave their mark on the rockers depending on where you go.

Some things to remember... (stock type truck, first time out)
1. know where your diffs are. Rocks will poke through a diff cover.
2. know where your t-case hangs down. Avoid busting that on a rock or getting hung up.
3. momentum is your friend. Not "high speed" just forward motion. This is especially true with stock vehicles on street tires
4. watch the vehicle in front of you. In a line of vehicles going down a trail, don't follow too close. Stay back enough so you can watch their tire placement vs where the diffs may be close to a rock or whatever. You'll get the idea when you're out there.
5. stay calm and have fun. If you get hung up, get out and look. Check your tire placement and see if you can change your line. Giving it more gas is not always the answer.
 
With some liquid courage you would be amazed at where a stock blazer will go. Just a joke!
 
You might want to take the swaybar off, it will increase articulation quite a bit. Just be ready the tires might rub a bit if you do.

Have a tow strap and tow points front and rear. Solid tow points. I have never minded having a stock rig along but it gets annoying to not have anything to hook to when said stock rig gets stuck.
 
Seeing that you are a virgin and have a stokich ride i would jus try and tag along with someone and get my feet wet first, or like said above try modest trails.

Ok, definately need a fire extinguisher or two, are the factory tow hooks strong enough up front or will they just snap when I look at them? Actually now that I think about it I lied... I wheeled my blazer in my neighbors yard 3 years ago trying to help him move a junk trailer on his property. We buried her up to her axles in the mud of his new lawn, and we used the towhooks to pull it out with a 4 wheel drive backhoe that also got stuck!!! What do you guys recommend for rear tow points?

I did my first wheelin last weekend, an now I am addicted. My stock jimmy went places I never dreamed of taking it. I had more fun than I ever imagined.

I did puncture a tire, thats when I learned my lug wrench didnt fit my lug nuts. A couple hours later I learned that a very old spare tire will fall apart. And then I learned that a Tacoma spare fits perfectly.

I went with a bunch of guys I work with, jeeps, tacomas, an x-terra thats totally BA, and my jimmy. They were all in love with my rig.

You can never have too many tools, jack, fire extinguisher, all the things listed above. Most importantly have fun and use common sense.
 
Do you have a receiver hitch? Just take the pin that goes in it, you can put a tow strap in the receiver put the pin through the loop and pull
 
rausch creek has a lot of easy trails that stockers will work fine on.they also have a lot of rock trails that a stocker wouldnt get over the first rock.just think about what you have and where it can actually go without breaking it.the blazer is very capable in stock form and will do ok on up to medium tough trails.id thing to the easy ones since this is your first time.as is every first time take it easy and you will last longer.lol.you want to have a set of tools that will take care of most things.i carry a socket set and combo wrenches up to 1 inch.screwdrivers of all kinds and a pry bar.2 sets of vise grips and adjustables of varying sizes.fire extinguisher,seat belts and they will look over your truck before letting you go out.full size spare tire and jack.need at least i believe 3 people to a group and at least one cb.its been since 05 i was out there.just look on their website and it gives you the requirements.have fun.

The one thing I haven't seen up is how well do you know any of the people you will be with. And are they aware you are a virgin. And most ohv parks have buy passes for the hard spots, that a stocker will have no problem with. So go for it, don't be scared its just wheeling. Have fun and do your best to pull your wight. We have all been the virgin. just watch, and learn, be the first to help if some one needs it. What you don't have in knowledge you can make up in muscle when its needed. ::deal::sign29:
