the lsx454 right?

yep...that things a beast! They keep saying that its on a small block platform. Does that mean it takes up a lot less of the engine compartment? So how do they get all those cubic inches?

Yup, that be a high-cube small block. The fact that it displaces 454 cubic inches doesn't make it a big block -- remember, there are 396ci big blocks and 400ci small blocks.

You get such displacement by making the cylinder jugs larger in diameter and the crank with a long stroke.

I seem to recall seeing SBC's in the region of 500 or 600ci ... crazy builds, high-RPM race stuff.

so does it change the power at all being small block as opposed to big block??? or is displacement displacement?

no replacement for displacement.... i think it was just the technology wasnt there to build reliable small block 454s in the olden days and it took bigger blocks to get bigger displacement..... nowadays they squeeze 400hp out of 6 cylinders so its not about block size anymore i think........

Short answer no, long answer yes.

A big block has heads that will flow much more air then small block heads, supporting higher power levels. But, Ls series heads are way better than Gen 1 SBC stuff....so it's not really an apples to apples comparison. Bottom line, bigger displacement motors will generaly make more power (torque).

so with the LSX 454 you get all the perks of a big block but it just leaves a smaller footprint in the engine bay?

A 454 you can rev the piss out of.... been my dream engine for a while
ahhh LSX'y
