Ok, today is my birthday and my parents got me a CD changer for my K5, they told me if I didn't like what they got me, I could just exchange it for something else since they didn't really know what to get me. I'd rather have an in-dash CD player because I'm afraid a changer might get stolen when I go topless and also I think my radio is crapping out.
Which one would be best for my needs?
Here are my requirements:
Removable faceplate
Auxillary imput so I can hook my Mp3 player and other things up to it
CD-RW compatibility
And of course it has to sound good

I realize that for the stereo to sound better, I may need better speakers, I listen to hard rock mainly (AC/DC, Black Sabbath, etc.). I think my current speakers are 8". I forgot the brand, but I'm pretty sure they're crap. Any suggestions?

Am I gonna need a new amp for the new stuff to do any good?

I'd like to keep this under $200 if possible.

Tough price range. I would look at the Pioneer DEH-P7400MP, or one of the lower price Kenwood or Fosgate MP3 players. The Pioneer is a very nice unit and it has changer controler, MP3 playback, and is XM ready at about $330.00. For about the same price the Kenwood KDC-MPV619 offers all the same, MP3, changer control and is Sirius ready at about $300. I know this is about $100 more than what you want to spend, but I think either would make you a lot better choice.
Is your current unit stock? Are the speakers stock? For best results you want to get an amp and upgrade all speakers and add a sub. But for improved sound I would at least upgrade the stock speakers as these deck swill have an increased amp and probably blow the stock speakers.

I just put in a Kenwood KDC-X659 from Crutchfield. I think it ran around $400. It plays CD-R/W and MP3 encoded CDs, and is Sirius sattelite radio ready. It's a great headunit, and I have been pleased with it so far.

I plan on getting the KDC-x919. It has all that plus the face is awesome. You can remove it or it will flip over and go black. It is about $480 though.

I just got some speakers, too. They're Pioneer TS-693P 6"x9"s. Are these good speakers? I looked and I'm pretty sure my old ones are Pioneer 6"ers mounted in the doors. I don't need a stereo with XM or an MP3 player, just one with a detachable faceplate, CD-RW compatibility, and an auxillary input jack. My current stereo is a JVC KS-RX-177 tape deck.

i noticed that you stated the price for the 919 as $480 i know the people at www.caraudiocrazy.com and they said that they sell them for about $360 so email them for any more info you may have

The reason I suggested the Kenwood that plays MP3 coded CD's was simply because I haven't seen a headunit with an auxillary plug in years. If you were worried about theft with the top off, this may be a better idea so you don't have to worry about having your MP3 player lying around, as your headunit plays them itself. Again, just my .02.

Ok, I see where you're coming from now. I've seen them with auxilary imputs at Best Buy, I was just wondering which of them would be a good choice. I'm not worried about my MP3 player getting stolen because I have a Tuffy console that I can lock it and the faceplate inside of. I would mount in my console, but that's where I plan to put a cb.

That is actually a damn good price, but I can get it for a lil over 300, but that does him no good.
I would second the MP3 head unit, the 619 unit is very nice, the satelite radio is pretty much standard now on all Kenwoods, and never say never. I think satelite (XM or Sirius) is going to be a lot bigger than most people think.

Look into JVC, they're a good headunit and you can usely get them cheaper then the Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, Alpine. Also consitter shopping at pawnshops, I've got some nice headunits there. Look around and don't buy the first one you come across.

My JVC KD-LX50 has a line in. It's last years modle.

I'll look into JVC then. I'm guessing you had to cut your dash. What did you use to cut it with if you did?

STAY AWAY FROM SONY XPLODE HEAD UNITS...

Now with that being said i will tell you why.. The main reason is if you ask almost all dealers that carry there line up they will tell you that almost all of the radios come back for warrenty work in under 6 months.. Sony units (excluding the top end, compation units) are not made the way they use to be and are using very cheap compontents inside. Hence all the problems they are having with them...

Stick to brands like Alpine, Kenwood, Clarion, JVC, and the new lineup of Fosgate radios (9 series not the 8 series)

keep the changer and mount it in a tuffy box/consule.
Its worth evey penny.

JVC digifine has the aux plug on the front of the headunit ;-)
