I'm going to kill someone...

(and you add caster when you put shims in)

[/ QUOTE ]

I was under the impression that by tipping the pinion up with shims, you'll REDUCE caster or make caster more negative. Am I wrong in thinking this?

I was under the impression that postive caster places the upper balljoint or kingpin tilted rearwards if an imaginary line was drawn between there and the lower balljoint/kingpin. Is the exact opposite true?

oh yea, i also replaced my steering stabilizer (was actually the first attempt at fixing this) But with my new 1.5" dia. tie-rod, no more stabilizer

[/ QUOTE ]

I assume you mean you removed the stabilizer because it wouldnt fit with your beefy tie rod? You need a stabilizer, they came from the factory with them and if your rig has a tendency to DW you need a really good one or two. Not the $21.99 Autozone ones either.

Re: I\'m going to kill someone...

I have wobble when running my brand new 44" tsl's, 38.5" ground hawgs, and 36" tsl sx's. They are all brand new. When I run my worn out 39.5" tsl's or 35" tsl's the wobble goes away. My 35" radial General MT's do the best. Do you have a friend that has wheels/tires to fit your truck that you could try out?

Does there seem to be a lot of play in the steering wheel or is it pretty tight?

You are correct, the reason I don't have a stabilizer right now is because of the beefier tie-rod...I do plan on getting a bracket to put it on, but don't have one yet. Like I said, this was the first thing I tried, -even before the new tie-rod- so all else held constant, a bum steering stabilzer was not the cause of my DW.

Ugly Blazer: That depends...someone in Denver want to be my friend and lend me some tires? /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

Just a thought....if you tried the new stabilizer before the other work (tie rods, etc) maybe between the combo of the new suspension parts and the new stabilizer your DW will go away. I wish I knew how to cure it, mine's got it BAD but Ive got rock rashed 38" bias plies that I feel are causing it. I finally put a stiff shock in place of the stabilizer but havent taken it out on the road to try it out yet, Im HOPING that will fix it. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Oops, someone says DW and I think D60 I guess. Didn't see the axle type in the post so... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: I\'m going to kill someone...

UPDATE!!

Today "Bear Frame and Axle" checked out my situation. I told them I have Death Wobble and Iwould please likethem to fix it /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif They said, no prob.

$500 later, AND after me asking

"So you took it on a test drive and it doesn't wobble?"

"Yea, I couldn't find a rough spot."

"Are you sure?"

"Yea"

I paid them the $500 and got on my way...Not 100 feet from the shop....DW /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

wow, I'm pissed....

Re: I\'m going to kill someone...

So what did they do that cost $500? Did you turn around and bring it back?

Mine drives MUCH better with the stiff shock in front as a stabilizer. Im certain mine is coming from the tires but the new stabilizer makes it bearable for around town.

Good luck, I hope you dont have to pay the shop $500 for nothing /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: I\'m going to kill someone...

Hey Bigyellow,

They installed new driver ball joints, and a front right shim, and did an alingment. WE discussed, and it was understood that I need to get a bracket to bolt on my steering stabilizer... the mechanic offered to "fab one up" for $180 /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif (That's how much the freakin TIE ROD cost!) anyways,I didn't take that. My nextplan on action is to call up Rockstomper (They don't work on mondays WTF /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif) And see if they'll make me one of their $25 ones that they had for the Rockrods-which were also 1.5 inch OD. So basically I didn't turn right around and take their heads off because the guy would have just said "Well duh, it needs a stabilizer....now I can fab that up for ya if ya want..." /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

I'm also going to bite the bullet and max out my second credit card and buy some new meats, bc mine are completey F*#@ed - look for that thread in a little bit.

Re: I\'m going to kill someone...

The one place I'm not sure you checked is in the spring eye bushings. If your rubber is shot and your getting some front to back movement at the spring hanger, it will cause a DW. May want to throw on some ORD greasable poly bushings to be sure.

Re: I\'m going to kill someone...

I am thinking maybe you have a tire, or two, with tread seperation.

Re: I\'m going to kill someone...

Yep, wouldnt suprise me but they work good for the rocks and still have tread so Im good as long as I can drive it a few miles from the trailer to the trail. Sounds like B to C's is his DD, I really hope the tires and stabilizer fix his problem /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I Only did my lift two years ago (Four new spring packs) and they all had new bushings so /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif...But thanks though! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Me too but mine are hammered anyway. have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you are watching the bushings.....its worth checking. Mine wears the drivers front the most. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

What about the bushing in the frame?

true dat. I'll check out all the bushings tomorrow...hmmm maybe I can ask some random person "hey can you come over here and turn my wheel? It'll only take a minute!" -I see a whole Sienfeld episode... /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

Re: I\'m going to kill someone...

UPDATE #3:

Today I got myself into even more debt and bought some Goodyear MT/R's to try and alleviate this whole situation. I also called up Rockstomper, and they're going to make me one of the mounting brackets for the stabilizer /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif . - I should have that by tomorrow early afternoon.

Soooooooo

after singing over my soul to MasterCard, I drive out of the goodyear shop and take aim on the first pothole I see. No DW /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif . Now don't get too excited...If I hit something that's big enough it will definitely still get into the wobble, BUT after tomorrow afternoon I am confident that I will be wobble free - I'll update either way, so you guys arn't left hanging...

Oh, and a BIG THANKS to everyone who contributed to this post /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

Re: I\'m going to kill someone...

Congrats! Let us know when its fixed for sure. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: I\'m going to kill someone...

Total cost of all attempted cures for my DW: $1,915.47

Not HAVING Death Wobble: Priceless /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

-I got the $25 stabilizer mount, and all is good /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

Thanks again to everyone...Sure I could have done it without you but it probably would have cost me even MORE money /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Re: I\'m going to kill someone...

So I guess you're in for the trip on the 22nd? It's hammer time! My lift will be done by Monday (taking longer than I thought) and my new tires will be going on too. It's gonna be great!!!
