hey guys,

Its been a while since I posted on here. I have an issue and its not making sense, I hope someone might be able to help me out.

I bought a 1993 1500 gmc suburban. I have had it for about a year and a half now with no problems. Last week I made the move from Oregon to Montana. when I got here after the 900 mile 16 hour drive I noticed a film all down the side of the suburban and on the back window. I noticed the drivers front wheelwel was soaked. I poped the hood and there was a heavy smell of gear oil.

After further inspection it seems to be gear oil comming out of the breather tube for the front diff. the end of the tube is behind the drivers headlight....Now I thought to myself thats impossible, how can gear oil travel all the way up the roughly 3 feet of breather tube and get all over everything. So I crawled under the truck and poped the fill cap off the front diff stuck my pinky inside and i could not feel any fluid.

the leaking seemed to stop the next couple days, then I finally bought some more gear oil and re-filled it. and sure as sh*t, after i drove it around it was smelling strongly of gear oil and it was leaking again..

what am i missing? how is this possible?....

I'll take some shots in the dark for the heck of it
1.Your using the wrong gear oil and its overheating causing it to slowly come out the breather tube in a gas form (not sure if thats possible :haha: )
2.Theres tons of sludge in there causing extra friction causing excessive heat and shooting it out
3.You Have a focked up R&P thats causing excessive heat making the fluid come out.

Basically, you have a bearing or something in there that has gone bad and its boiling the grease.

Either that, are something has come loose inside and is whipping the oil into a foam causing it to expand and bubble out the top.

Either way, odds are things are going to come to a screeching halt pretty quick if you don't pull the cover and find out whats going on.

I probably need smacked for even asking this, but is the breather tube behind the head light a stock location. I was wondering if may be the air pressure/vaccum from going down the highway is syphoning the diff oil out once it gets heated up and thinned out.:dunno: My factory breather tube stops at the frame. Not near as much wind there. Its just a thought.

it's definately a bearing going out! Get your diff rebuilt ASAP....

I had my rear go nuclear from the same problem going 65mph while pulling a trailer down the highway. Caught on fire and burned up the rear seat before I was able to put it out. Not pretty and not a cheap fix.....repair your diff before something like this happens! Gear oil will burn if it gets hot enough and there's enough pressure in the diff:eek1:
