Hey, found really sweet rig in Texas that I may buy but currently have no way to tow it. The engine on that car is toast. What would you recommend?
  • I don't have a car trailer capable of towing 7000 lbs SUV
  • I don't have a car that can pull 7000 lbs trailer
I do have some friends with pickups or big SUVs like Sequoia, I may be able to borrow their car. Still don't have a trailer, how would you go about transporting that car?

Thanks

does the range rover weigh 7000 ? Is that gross weight rating, cargo passengers and liquids ? I bet it doesn't weight 7000. what model is it ? U haul says I can tow a 1997 land rover discovery 90 with my 2001 2500 Suburban, on one of their car trailers

hmm seems I confused range rover with land rover dam English cars. Don't forget you'll need to refill the Lucas smoke, I bet someone already let the smoke out

U haul doesn't like either of the range rover choices. Need to model and year

I would do it with a dolly but I am experienced in towing.
Not for the faint of heart for such a long trip.
And no the range rover shouldn't be 7000 lbs, more like 5000 lbs

The naming is stupid. It's 2008 Land Rover Range Rover (L322). Can I put it on UHaul trailer then?
I am not sure if it can go on a dolly, it has automatic rear e-locker.

I don't see how an e-locker can engage when the vehicle is off.

7000lbs is more than my 3/4-ton BBC Suburban.

Can you rent a 3/4-ton pickup from Hertz or somebody? A 1-way rental on a Uhaul trailer is like $400-$500, but if you haul it both ways you can get if for $55. However, I'm not sure U-Haul approves of a 5000lb vehicle on their trailer. We just had a thread about what they do and don't allow. There are also other equipment rental places that will rent bigger trailers than U-Haul does.

Did you see my post above?
No land rover/ range rover passes the 5000 lbs.

All the 4x4 rover models are land rover, range rover is a sub model name.
Look at the emblem, they all say land rover

Not to be a downer, but I can think of a lot of things I could spend time on than buying a used, broke Land Rover anything. Like say getting kicked in the balls repeatedly would still be more fun and not nearly as expensive or frustrating.

I get they have a some redeeming off road qualities, but the high cost of entry, high cost of parts and questionable build quality in the electrical stuff would have me running for the hills.

Again I don’t mean to throw a wet blanket on anybody’s fun but be realistic about the vehicle here. You’ll have cost to rent/borrow a truck and trailer. Add fuel and travel expenses into the mix too. Is the rover that rare or desirable that a comparable unit couldn’t be found closer or in running condition? Factor in a replacement engine for it. What’s that gonna run? Add up all the costs and then I’d add half again just to factor in the “what if” bs that always comes up on stuff like this. If that final number is within your means of covering by all means go to town and have fun but my bet is the number is going to be shockingly bigger than you thought originally.

Me personally, I would walk across the street to buy a rover (land or range) running or not. I’ve had just enough experience on British vehicles to avoid them at all costs. But that’s just me.

So I'm looking at approx $2000 for the transport itself? It's 1800 miles one way so 3600 round trip. Fuel itself will end up somewhere between $700-$1000 I'm thinking.

The vehicle is 2008 Range Rover Supercharged with 4.2 Jaguar motor - the most reliable model from the whole Range Rover line up. It's been owned by a single owner and maintained religiously. I know what I'm getting into. I have carfax with all repairs done at the dealership.

Naming is confusing, you have models like:
Land Rover Range Rover
Land Rover Range Rover Sport
Land Rover Range Rover Supercharged
Land Rover Range Rover Sport Supercharged

People get it wrong all the time.

My next door neighbor had a Range Rover and there was always something wrong with it. He constantly worked on it till he said enough and traded it off.

An engine from another British car that may be more reliable that the standard Land Rover engine isn’t saying much. It’s still British.

Going rate on a supercharged 4.2l Land Rover engine according to car-part.com starts at $1500 and goes up to $3000. None of them having less than 100k miles either.

Who’s doing the swapping? You? Paying a shop? With a dead engine you have no way to prove the trans isn’t shot or anything else for that matter.

Keep one more item in mind since the OP resides in California. Emissions. Is is CA compliant? That’s a whole other hoop to jump through.

Run away…. It’s a deal because they already got the price to fix it and can’t justify the expense. Likely they got an estimate that exceeds the current book value.

You noticed all start with land rover, that's the division name.
