Did I order the wrong springs, or am I supposed to re-use that top overload spring? Do I have to re-use it? Would leaving it out calm the ride down a bit?

Here's my stock spring...

Also, I ordered new shackle/bracket/spring hangers for the front springs from LMC. These shackles are pretty thin and look weak to be putting on a big block one ton rig. Should i just go ahead and make my own shackles out of some 1/4 or 5/16 inch steal? thanks in advance!

Jesus, with a pack that thick I'm surprised it doesn't break your spine. Anyways no, the top overload doesn't come into play until in your case heavy ass load is placed in the bed. You could probably pull 2 or 3 springs out and that would really help.

454 sub is right. That top overload only effects ride when it comes into contact with the brackets on the frame above them. You don't have to reuse it but I would.

Where did you buy those rear packs from?

EDIT:
Nevermind I see it now.

Since you ordered the HD springs I am guessing you plan to do some heavy hauling? If so I don't think removing leaves is a great idea unless you added an airbag set-up to compensate for that.

95PSI load range F tires don't help the ride quality, either.

Damn! Thats cheap for that part number!!!

You should have gotten the rear shackles from ORD. They're BEEF!

Holy crap, that thing looks like its been at the bottom of the ocean for 25 years.

Scrape the barnicals off that thing! hehe :P :waytogo:

Even with $150 for shipping, they were the cheapest around.

I didn't like that you have to drill out the frame for bigger bolt holes and a bigger bushing. And i just couldn't justify the added cost.

Welcome to Wisconsin!

wished i had known you wanted rear springs .

but glad you got what ya wanted.

my idea these days is light duty 56" in my 1ton then firestone air bags to make it better when loaded.

That is what I have considered for mine. My crew had a broke rear main leaf that I replaced a few months back & it had me considering the same thing.

This is my winter vehicle, and winter is fast approaching so i wanted to make this a weekend project. Maybe come spring I will go the soft spring and airbag route. Maybe a lift, but I really like the way it looks now and i don't know how it well it will handle lifted with my tall and super narrow tires.

Made new shackles for the front today. And got a visit from the Grade 8 Fairy!

Well, I wanted to do the rear springs and put new bushings in the front springs, and new front spring shackle mounts; basically all I got done was the rear springs. Started to do the front spring shackle and frame mount and realized not all of the parts I got from LMC were not correct. Should have done more looking around/asking before I ordered parts. Turns out the shackles and rear spring eyelet are different from 1/2-3/4 ton to one ton. Thankfully the front eyelet bushing I ordered is what is required for the rear eyelet (well, it fits like it belongs there.) And thankfully I didn't go mental with the torch and blast everything apart.

Here's what I took out...

Another dumb question, should i look for u-bolts that are "flat" on the top like the OEM ones were, or is this fine?

2012-11-11114935.jpg

flat top is factory only basicly. those are just fine like that.

typical rust belt leafs there in those pic's

and if doing front shackles just get the ord hd shackle kit with bushings. and i opt for greasable on all my stuff so i can lube it reg to keep the bushings alive longer.

Yeah, the rust doesn't surprise me at all. Lived here in Wisconsin my whole life, so this is par for the course. When I took the factory nuts off the u-bolts on my 1966 New Yorker (that lived in Southern California it's whole life) with no oil and a 3/8ths ratchet, now that was a pleasant surprise!

Speaking of pleasant surprises, this truck rides like a dream with these new springs. I'm kinda baffled that it rides smoother.

Probably rides smoother because the new springs can actually flex. The old ones were so rusted that if they were not actually frozen together, they could barely slide along each other.
So they felt like solid chunks.
