Park it and get back to it when you can. I assume that it isn't tied up in a loan so it won't cost you anything to just let it sit somewhere other than storage insurance(cheap). Drive the yota and save your gas money. I use to think its just a car and I can get another one. Not what I really wanted though. My father and I have drifted apart some but I still remember the long hours we spent together on my first car. Keep it or you'll regret it later.

Exactly. You will have the time/money at some point and will regret having sold it.

u dont really need full coverage....im 17 and gatta pay for insurance, i jus have liability, come out to about $550-600 for the year. it works out b/c it covers the car u get in an accident, but u have to pay for ur own car. i dont plan on gettin in an accidnet thats my fault, and if so, ill buy the parts off here :D i dont need the insurance company installing chineese universal parts.

keep it! :D

My K5 was my dads and me and him spent many hours working on it. Then came a day he said it's yours as soon as I get another car. I scratched my head and looked at my car. 5.0L 88 Cougar I just spent like 3 grand on parts. Gave him my car and it made us both happy. He still helps me with some repairs. I've had it now about 7 years and been offered money for it almost every other month. But until it burns or I can sweep it up ( rust) it will be mine. I have parked it for 2 years and ignored it, and went thru about 10 different rigs and then went back to it. I just keep a car for when money gets tight swap insurance to car and go. Personally I would keep it but just remember your dad would be proud of you no matter what.

Still not sure what to do.
If I keep it I will probably just let it sit for a while. It'd be different if it was running then I could just ignore it until I have the money. But the front brakes need to be replaced, and the choke is still not tuned, and now I need a new battery because the one in it isn't charging at all.

I don't really need any fancy insurance on it if I were to insure it, I have a full front clip from the old blazer and doors and a top and back glass. So I could always use that if anything bad happened. The Positive to keeping it is it's a strong vehicle my mom says, compared to the toyoota. As in, if I drive on the highway and crash, the jimmy will last better than the yota. Nice thinking eh?

I also have a bunch of parts laying around, f/r 10 bolts, np203, np205, 2 th-400's (1 2wd and 1 4wd) and some small stuff I could sell. From when I had "plans" in my head  Although I don't know if I want to sell the 203/205. I could use that in the future for a doubler. But thats distant. so I could always get "new" ones when the time comes, then I have more space in the shop. and get moola.

Just thinking out loud.

Insurance isnt that bad. Im only 18 and I have two vehicles insured...and my insurance is less than $700 a yer. Second...Im not sure how it works....but you may be able to qualify for federal aid if you move to school in the us. I have a full class schedule at a state university....and I still have a job working 4 days a week. Its not that hard. All your classes are over early (generally) so you can work at night.
Then....its out to party!!!!! :saweet:

BTW- I still have the blazer and another car now to drive around. Now that i dont dd the k5, im going to use some of the money i earn to put in a cage...among other things. Im just telling you this to show that you can keep going forward while in college.

Steve, if I were you i'd explain to your Mom why you'd like to keep it...I'm sure she'd probably be cool about storing it if she knew how much sentimental value it has for you.

As far as insurance goes, yes it will cost you $1000 minimum to insure it here in BC...but, you can just put a storage policy on it for a measly $18 a year. That'll cover fire, theft and vandalism, you just can't drive it.

It costs you next to nothing to hang on to it, and in a few years you will be able to jump back in where you left off. I am pretty certain you would regret selling it, and I'm also pretty certain that it's current value isn't enough to justify selling.

Ive gone through the same thing you have man. I have a C10 that has sat since early november of 2001, My GMC has pretty much sat for a little over a year now, just getting back to it now. I simply cant part with them, Ive spent so much time thus far with so many friends and family working on my GMC, my C10 was my first pickup so thats something completed different all together. And now I have my Grandfathers C20, im sure one day I will have to part with at least one of them And I know for sure that it will be a sad day, but for now Im keeping ahold of them as much as I cant.

Insureance wise Id say drop it or see if you can get a plan for a certain amount of miles, one of my college professors had an older camaro that he had insureance on for dirt cheap since he drove it under 5000 miles a year or something like that.

I'm old now. 31 and two kids. My first car was at 16. A 70 Chevelle I bought for $325. I Put a 383 strocker in it 456 posi and had the body work done. I sold it when I was about 24 after I crashed it and couldn't afford to fix it. I lived it a crack head appt block and didn't like it parked outside. I got $3500.00 bucks for it with a bent frame wich was lucky for me but I still miss it and feel guilty I sold it.There was no family ties to it or real sentimental value.

LEARN FROM THE REST OF US. DON"T SELL IT. YOU WILL REGRET IT WHEN YOUR OLD LIKE ME

Eloquent, as always; reminiscent of Tim. Nothing better than an expletive to make an intelligent point.

That is what I was thinking about your first post on this thread..

Your mind may change, but I bet the money doesn't - ditch the K5, you can't afford it.I've seen a few of your posts; it's time to grow up. Part of growing up is realizing that if you need a K5 to remember your Dad, then there's something seriously wrong with you.

Sell the K5, pay off your debt on the Toy, and have a clean slate when you start your new life at college.

Rather than worrying about a Q-Jet for months on end, who knows, you could actually take the Toy out on a few trails (as opposed to surfing the web, and living through the experiences of others...), gain some experience in 4WD, and have a better idea of what you want to build when you can afford it - and it may be a K5, but then again, it may not. Simply put, a mildly built truck on the trail is by far better than a really badass truck on jackstands... like so many on this board...
Keep in mind that you owe it to your Dad to honor him, and one way of doing this is to do well in school, rather than being distracted by financial trouble.

I say keep it... let it sit and dont pay insurance on it till you drive it. Im actually doing that right now with my blazer... its been sitting for 5 months so far :wink1: Im 16 with over 8 driving violations(speeding tickets, running stop signs, exhibition driving etc...) and i was only paying 400 bucks every six months on the blazer. Im also insuring 2 other vehicles at the moment.... i think youd really regret selling it.

Earlier I decided to keep it and just leave it.
Now I don't know what to do because every time I look at it I have invisions or plans that I want to do...that cost a lot of money.

Keep the truck and maintain it so it doesn't rot in the corner of your yard and wait until you have the money to do what you want with it. If you start a project you know you cannot afford you may as well go out there right now and put a match to it and watch it burn and save yourself the money and the heartache of hauling it off for scrap later

i still say hold on to it. resurrected jimmy is kind of on the right track, but goes a little extreme with the arson bit. keep it, maintain its current condition, and when you have the time/money, restore it and modify it to the glory that it deserves.

Thats the thing though. I won't have any money soon. And It needs money just to be functioning enough to move, and I don't know how to explain it, so its hard to diagnose, so then its hard to ask on here, etc.
Also, I need to start saving money for post highschool schooling. I will have money later, but thats a long later.
So the Jimmy will just sit for a long time.

I don't know...

Don't make the uncomfortable decision unless it's the last resort. Here's a list ; 3 VWs, goofy, but naw; '61 & a '68 (Italian) Alfa Romeo, wouldn't mind having them now, neat drivers, gone (F); '57 XK140 DHC RHD, needed full resto but omigod chick bait, and bitchin to drive, gone (F); '61 Olds F85, aly 215 cu.in. V8, but naw; '79 Seville, I have space now so it's parked until resto time, orig long block w 280K miles; '73 Norton Commando w 4K miles and a beauty, "i dun''t hhhaav a drnking ppprrobllm!", sold it, foktard, but the guy lives close by and I'm wondering if he'd let it go now that he has kids/family, and I grew up; '85 S15 brand new, was riding Honda to work, three tickets against comp ins on the truck, sold it, instant regret because of the utility; '85 K10 Burb, it was bionically implanted, so to remove it now means termination. Probably what I said here is, if it was ever more than "steel & rubber", and you can somehow hold on to it, you'll be able to look back with the greatest swelling in your chest and say that old Jimmy is just as tough, willing, proud and as wise as I am.

I would say sit on it, but i wonder how much would be left of it in a few years.

unless you started it every week, and moved it back and forth, you gunna have proplems, not to mention rust, ou would have to spray the thing with oil reall good to hault the rust where it is at or at least slow it down.

what i find sad it old cars and trucks that are actualy worth something that i see sitting around behind barnd and in fealds, ask the owner if they want rid of it?

no no that car good i am going to restore it one day, 4 years later they call you and ask if you want it, NO it is totaly gone now.

tis better to burn then to fad away.
