i assume the switch gets 12 volts to 12v terminal the two black wires go to ground? but i wanted to ask before i short it out

I guess you have a couple weeks to sort it out lol

so my take is the off on switch gets power and ground, the push buttons reverse, similar to a power window switch

Grab a voltmeter and set it for continuity (ohms) and double check it. I think the way you described it is correct but you never know with internet parts these days.
