Great way to join the great group of CK5 lovers. I just bought a 1990 Jimmy as a project truck for my 16yr old I to tinker with. We have a massive punch list of things to tackle but this morning I started with looking for Torque rods for the tailgate and a bracket. Looks like previous owner broke one or remove the gate and never reinstalled the rods and lost/didn't install one of the retainer brackets.

Junk yard my only option? I can't find either online.

I believe he’s talking about the torque bar for tailgate assist. I haven’t seen anyone selling them , but for the bar you can get some spring steel round stock and bend up your own using the other as a template if you strikeout at the junkyard. The bracket is fairly basic too if you guys like to fabricate. I just finished restoring my tailgate, ended up with like 40 hours into it. Or if you plan on going the soft top route you can take the easy way out and throw a pickup tailgate on there.
welcome aboard!

Thanks Gentleman Jimmy - You are correct and I will edit my original post. I am looking for the tailgate bar(s) - Sounds pretty straight forward on crafting my own up. We do have long term plans for a softtop but that is likely one of the last things on the list so interim we want the gate to have some assist in lifting. Pretty heavy without the bars. As for the truck gate swap, 89-91 Jimmy, are there any specific trucks years to look out for?

For the truck gate swap, any square body year will fit. Be sure to get the matching trunnion hardware for the gate as there are 2 sizes (not sure on the year break).

I’m not too savvy on the tailgate swap, but I’m sure there’s a lot of info on here if you try the search feature. I’m sure the other guys will chime in too, lots of people run the truck gates. I just like the hard top and and power window setup.

Same here! Thought having both would be ideal. Time will tell. Thanks again. We just rolled it out of the garage to check the tailgate and it is missing both brackets, two bolds and the torque rods. Looks like this may be project held until we work our way to the rear.

I have a truck gate on my 91, it's a direct bolt up. I should also say you need all of the hardware (latches, etc) as well as it needs to be matching, none of it interchanges with a blazer window type gate.

Do you have pictures of the gaps. From what I was reading the tailgate doesn't fit as tight. (not a major concern) What year truck did you pull it off?

I don't have any great pics to show the gaps but it wouldn't matter, a truck gate floats on the trunnions so it can shift left and right each time it's opened/closed. It can't shift enough to rub the body but the gaps would likely constantly change. It seems like the gaps are basically the same as a Blazer gate.

Thank You! Looks like a new gate is on the hunt and find list! I appreciate the wealth of knowledge and willingness to share.
