Well, a couple weeks ago I left my reverse lights on and killed my batteries. I put them on the trickle charger on a low setting and went to start the truck the next day to no avail. I put them on a higher setting, thinking I would get back to the project soon. I didn't, and they sat there on the highest setting for 3 or 4 days. :doah:

Today I went to get my truck started up and decided to have the batteries checked before I screwed around with them. I'd had them on the trickle charger all morning. When checked, they were showing less than a volt each. Great. If I remember right, I spent $250 to $300 on the damn things 5 years ago. They're sealed Exide batteries, 750 CCA at 0*F, nice batteries. Well, I wasn't excited about dropping that kind of money down because of such a stupid mistake.

I decided to go by the local Bi-Mart to see what they had. I found some Exide batteries that had been re-badged as Bi-Mart brand for $66 each that were 850 CCA at 0*F. :woot: Truck fired up like a champ. :D

So, bummer to spend so much money, but at least it wasn't $300 like I'd expected. :D I was eyeballing a Redtop at the hardware store w/ 800 CCA, but decided to shop around. Decided I was never going to need to mount my batteries upside down, so a regular battery would be fine. :D

If the batteries were DEAD as in little to nothing left in them a charger usually won't start to charge them so you have to add another battery that has voltage in it to "excite" the charger. We used to use this trick at the parts store where I worked. People would come in all the time and say they had it on a trickle charger and nothing happened but we would ALWAYS bring them back within 2 days.

good trick
just run them in parallel while charging?

Yep. The battery with voltage present will allow the charger to charge the completely dead battery. You can actually charge both batteries at the same time this way but it will take longer than doing a single battery but could be good if you have multiple batteries to charge.

yup, i do it at work all the time with a booster pack...

Dang. That would've been nice to know about 16 hours ago. :) Oh well. I got a good deal. :haha:
