Increasing gas mileage for a daily driver

I dont think you'll be able to get 15mpg consistently. These trucks are a gas hogs, I think you'd be better off keeping the S10. My uncle has a 2001 S10 2wd with K&N intake, and nology spark plug wires and gets 23-24mpg around town and we've gotten 26highway. Just drive the truck for a bit and see what kind of mpg you get.

get a tbi k5?.....my 91 with 31X10.5X15 stock gets 15-17mph(65-70 on highway, i should and probably will go slower with prices going up)....i do need to do a tuneup though....

btw is that low or decent for a tbi k5?

If you run duals without cats then it will be louder but 2 cats and 2 mufflers is definetly quiter than 1 cat and 1 muffler.

You arguing loudness based on a thread that consisted of a handful of people talking back n forth about flowmaster mufflers??? Don't believe everything you read on an internet BBS, "your experience may vary" :D

Hi-

I just bought an 85 Jimmy last week on ebay. I am waiting for it to be shipped here from California. I got a great deal on it. It is in great mechanical shape with no rust. It only needs a little interior work. I was really excited about it until gas prices spiked this week. I am not going to be doing any off roading and I will be doing about 90% of my driving on the highway. I was driving a 96 s-10 with the 4.3 high output. I was getting about 20mpg. I decided to buy the Jimmy because I got tired of having a vehicle I can't work on because of the computer system. Besides that, the 2wd doesn't do too well in the snow even with 500 pounds of sand in the back and the ABS system has been acting up.

I drive about 300 miles a week to and from school. I am working my way through college and I don't have a lot of extra money to waste on gas. I am making a little money by selling my truck and I am trying to find ways to increase the fuel economy on the Jimmy.

It has a freshly rebuilt 305 with 1000 miles on it and about 500 on a rebuilt tranny. It is all stock with 32x265x15 tires. I am thinking about doing some of the following: Narrower tires (it needs new tires anyway), carb spacer, dual exhaust, upgrade the distributor/ignition, upgrade air filter/air intake system. Any suggestions on what would give me the best bang for my buck and what things would make no difference? I would love to keep the Jimmy but if I can't get better than 15 mpg I will have to sell it and keep my S-10. I am afraid of what it will cost to feed this thing during the summer when gas is $2.25 a gallon. Thanks!!!

i wouldnt do any mods to the drivetrain besides basic tuneups. nothing will significantly improve mileage enough to pay for itself in fuel savings. since you said the tires need to be changed anyway, id get the smallest, narrowest ones your comfortable with. most of these trucks came from the factory with 235/75/15's. dorky as hell , yes. but i think thats where you'll find the best mileage gains. at the very biggest i'd get 31x10.50's... but those are still too wide. not when u get out of school and can afford the gas, upgrade to bigger tires.

buy a motorcycle. You will get close to 50mpg. When it rains, take the truck.

I doubt you will ever see gas being cheap. People love to waste fuel and theres nothing you can do about it.

you will be getting 15 with some tuning and some small mods like the exhaust and intake. Volant makes some awesome cool air intake system that have produced 15-23 rwhp because of the poly ethalyne air tube and filter intake position

You really think that a pipe, that goes from your air filter, to the front of your truck can generate 15-23 RWHP on a naturally aspirated gasoline engine?

Where'd you get that tech info? Import Tuner?

Speaking of Import Tuner - take the $1200 and buy a ricer for a DD. Best thing that I ever did for gas mileage was to buy a car - especially if you are driving 300 miles a day. Save the K5 for weekends, bad weather and hauling.

I never was/is/will be talking about cats being included.

My dual 40 series with Hooker headers is twice as loud as my single 40 ever was.

Honda Civics in the paper everyday for $1200. Dependable, economic, and cheap. Keep the K5, but DD a Honda.

I appreciate everyones help, but please no more replys suggesting I buy a third vehicle. I already have a 69 Camaro sitting in the garage and I can't afford to pay for taxes, tags, and insurance for three vehicles. I would love to keep the Jimmy. I think it will be a lot of fun to drive and the four wheel drive will come in handy. I know that the gas mileage will be no where near what I have with my truck, but I would like to bump it up a little if possible. If not, I will put a little work into the interior and turn around and resell it for a little profit.

I don't really want to keep my truck because the ABS system is acting up. The dealership hasn't been able to fix it. It has about 135,000 miles on it and I am just waiting for things to start to break. The camaro is my main priority and I don't have the time, money, or space for two weekend drivers.

Thanks again for all the suggestions!!:)

Get it, drive it, and see what kind of mileage you are getting with it. After a week or two of your normal commute you will know if you can afford to keep it or not.

you nuts? we already have to many ricers on the road pretending to be fast.

The Jimmy got here today. As always, buying things on ebay never works out quite as well as one would hope. The Jimmy is in pretty solid shape, but the paint leaves a lot to be desired. I still need to road test it once the proof of insurance gets here later today.

As was predicted earlier in the the thread, the Jimmy has the smog pump and the computer controlled carb. I haven't owned a setup like this. Is there an advantage to keeping this system? Will I still be able to adjust the air/fuel mixture? It is running pretty rich. If I get rid of it, what kind of work is involved and will it help the performance?

Thanks a lot!
