I have a little problem with my '83. It wouldn't start this afternoon, acted like it was hydro-locked. Batt's and starter are good and after letting it sit for 5 minutes I had my wife crank it while I watched. I saw the engine slowly creep over as she hit the key...then spun normally and started. Got some nice blueish/black smoke from that tailpipe.

Yesterday I fired it up and got a good amount of smoke from the passenger pipe...something it's never done before.

My theory is I have an injector that is leaking fuel into the motor, has anyone had this happen? I have some spare injectors, but have no way of narrowing it down to one specific injector. If my theory is BS I don't really want to swap 4 injectors for nothing.

I did check the coolant level and it's right up where it's been since I did the heater core 6 weeks or so ago. That and the black smoke at start up says raw fuel to me.

I don't know, black smoke is usually raw fuel in a hot chamber, raw fuel when cold is white.
I am having black smoke in mine and it won't start, still haven't figured it out but one comment was possibly bacteria or fungus in the fuel

Well, when cold it was whitish smoke and plenty of it from the passenger pipe. When it did the "hydrolock" thing it was operating temp, and I got some black smoke...

Also, when I started it cold I got a small puddle of fuel that came out of a hole in the passenger muffler. :doah:

I'm sure it has to be one injector dripping fuel after shut-down. I'm thinking of pulling the GP's from the passenger bank of the engine, pulling the pink wire off, and having my wife hit the starter and see what I can see. If my theory is correct I should get a spurt of fuel out of one of the GP holes.

I say that would be a good way.:D
I guess I didn't read your post very well, I thought you said black smoke when cold :doah:

Well, this evening I replaced all 4 injectors on the passenger side. After replacing the front two I fired it up, waited for it to warm up a little and the smoke wasn't there. I revved it a few times and the smoke started up again.

So, I then replaced the back two injectors and let me tell you they are a royal pain in the arse to get to because of the AC. I had to remove the sound deadening cover from the AC to get number 4 swapped.

I fired it up after changing number three...same smoke after revving it a few times.

I figured number four would turn out to be the culprit but after getting that one swapped out...same friggin smoke.

The smoke looks grey/blue and doesn't smell like coolant or anything, but at this point I'm really thinking head gasket.
