Anyone tell me which way to turn the pump to advance the timing??...I know the factory setting is to align the timing marks, but I suspect my 85 Burb may have had someone diddle with the timing,as it was prepped to be a "veggy oil" vehicle, and it sounds to me like the timing is retarted, its quieter than my other 6.2 and seems more sluggish when you accelerate, and it starts hard too, when its cold (that might be a glow plug issue,I have not had all of them tested yet,but I did replace a few dead soldiers!).....I have not yet looked at the timing marks to see where it is set at yet...

Would I move the marks to the passenger side or drivers side to advance the timing??...never done it before,so any advice on which bolts to losen, and how to go about moving the pump would be helpful...(what wrench to use,etc)..

The pump is mounted on studs with nuts. You need to loosen the three nuts that hold the pump to the engine. Rotate the pump towards the passenger fender, snug the nuts and try it. If it's more clattery you went the right way...:haha:

The nuts can be a bit of a bear to get to...but try to use the box end of the wrench if at all possible.

Remember it's not like a distributor, I wouldn't move it more than 1/16" past the scribe line on the block in either direction.

I cant watch youtube or any other videos on mycomputer,so I have no idea what you posted about,sorry!...

I think they may have retarted the timing,or maybe the timing chain has enough slop so it retarted itself maybe--engine has 160K on it....yesterday it actually started without needing jumper cables or starting fluid!..it was only 45 degrees out,so I think at least most of my glow plugs are working...

The truck starts kind of weird--you energize the glow plugs ,then crank it over, and it sounds like you hear it want to fire up,like several cylinders are firing--then it just spins over without firing, but I can see smoke coming out of the tailpipes...if I let the electric fuel pump run a few minutes and try again, after some cranking it starts firing again, then it'll usually start suddenly with a diesel "clatter"...sometimes it'll start and die once, even if I floor it,but the next attempt usually gets it fired up ...

It may be bad fuel,I have had the truck since november '09,and it had almost a full tank, now its just about half full--tried siphoning some out to see if it had any "grease" mixed in or water, but it looks & smells like regular diesel, but who knows what may have been put in it?...I'm also thinking maybe that electric pump alone aint enough pressure, they by-passed the mechanical lift pump ,also used 15 feet of rubber fuel line instead of steel too, which I plan to change--not sure if that might have had a factor in how its acting...once it starts up,it runs godd...but I'll be looking for another gear reduction starter if I cant get this thing to fire up quicker,I'm surprised I have not fried it already,to be truthfull...

I'll see if I can look at the IP today and if need be,adjust the timing...thanks guys!..:D

I cleaned off the pump & block, found the marks, and they are aligned perfect,so I didn't disturb the pump--maybe I'll try advancing it later when the weather improves, but for now I am not going to touch it...its probably the glow plugs and old fuel causing it to start hard...added some "Deisel Kleen" to the fuel and hopefully it'll help some..
