Yeah, though some people seem to have had them work, I've found the one on the carb inlet to be nothing but trouble. I leave them and their spring out and go with an external one.
I was running hard line from the fuel pump to about halfway up the block, and then rubber line to the carb, with the filter plumbed in there, but my carb guy pointed out that the rubber line was decaying quickly from the heat. It was less than a year old and was already starting to bulge and crack ... scary!
His advice, which worked out nicely, was to do two hardlines from the fuel pump up to the carb, and put a coupler in the middle to allow for some flex. He also said to put the filter on the vacuum side of the pump right there up front. The hardline also keeps the fuel cooler, which is apparently a good thing.
So far, I've not had any leaks and I'd almost claim a slight seats-of-the-pants improvement in throttle, but that could be phase of the moon =))
I figgered that having the filter up front in the frame rail would be mildly annoying to change, but even with that giant 2WD crossmember in the way, it was fairly easy to get to. I just put a rag to soak up the gas that spilled, which wasn't much.
I s'pose another option would be to go to an electric fuel pump,
