Inline power steering filter wanted

Turns out the one above is too restrictive at 25 microns, I've been reading 150 micron filter would be better?

I think WIX used to make one,or the one they sold for transmissions that go in the cooler return line would work OK on a P/S pump...(maybe they were one in the same?)...If I had my Wix catalog handy I'd give you a part number, but its not nearby at the moment..

I've heard over on the "other" board that the reservoirs with filter can cause some problems. I'm not sure whether I even need a filter. Looks like the magnaflow inline filters might be my best option if one is needed.

Power steering filters are not really a necessary item, and pumps for these trucks are pretty cheap. If the system needed one it probably would have come with one from the factory. It's not really worth causing problems for something that has really a marginal benefit. A cooler is definitely a much more significant preventative measure.

I run filter and cooler for both transmission and power steering fluid (especially with hydraboost). for filter, I bought a spin-on base from Summit and use the small K&N spin-on.

That picture is more what I was looking for. I do have a cooler I'm installing at the same time and I'd love not to have to run a filter. If Wade says it's not a must, then I'm not going to bother running one. Done deal. :)

Just typed a long response and lost it.

Short version. If dirt or metal is in the system, find out why and fix it. The cooler saves the system when you are turning lock to lock with tall wide tires all day.

problem is, if you have dirt or metal in the system, you probably won't know until it takes out components. pumps are cheap, but good steering boxes and hydraboost not so much. crap will do nothing but circulate through all of the above over and over unless it's filtered.

then, if you do have a failure, oil in the other components, lines, and cooler will be contaminated and if not flushed well, will contaminate the new part.

100,s of thousands of miles have been logged up on vehicles for years without a PS filter. Now a days no transmission filters either.
Fresh fluid works wonders every now and then.

Can't hurt if it's what you want tho.

Routine maintenance is crucial.

Remember one thing. People tend to forget that while its a power steering system, its actually just a hydraulic system.
So, instead of looking for a power steering filter, check to see what regular hydraulic systems use.
Tons of stuff available.
Generally a hydraulic system has a screen type filter on the input to the pump, and a filter element on the return.
Since you don't have access to the input to the pump unless you are running a remote res, do a search for return line hydraulic filters.

I'm building up a system with a remote reservoir. The way it's set up, I'm trying to keep the return line going all uphill to make bleeding air out easier and a big extra filter just messes with my nice neat arrangement of hoses. I've been looking for a small one that both does a good job and doesn't overly restrict flow. At this point, it's deleted from my plans unless after testing it something changes and I'm sure that one is needed.
