Howdy fellers,

How hard is it to change the inner guides on a 10 bolt? Are they basically just a needle bearing? The needle bearing was shot on the pass side spindle and it wasn't too hard to get out, but the inners look like a different story. Do you really need them (well I know you do), but this burb see mostly 2WD and is rarely in 4WD, only when necessary. This is on the pass (short axle) side and was wondering since the one axle end already rest in the case in the spider side gears, if it would suffice. The other side looks like it is all intact.
Appreciate any and all replies, thank you.

If you are talking about the inner axle tube guides than they require a fair amount of work to replace - not anything hard just a good afternoon worth of work for the average wrench turner.

The guides are mated to the inner axle seals ( buy the guides with the seals in tact , not seperate ) . You will need to completely take the front axle apart to gain access to the seals when they are knocked out.
Be real careful when installing the new seals so that they are not warped or distorted in any way.
Just a note replace BOTH at the same time no matter how good you think the other side is. The same amount of labor is involved to do it again fo rthe other side.

I have no idea what you are talking about as far as "guides" go. The only thing in the dif housing related to the axle shaft are the seals the shaft slides thru right at the carrier. The spindle has needle bearings that ride on the stub shaft. Those can be a lil bit of a pain to get out but honestly- if this truck sees little 4x4 action then clean the hell outta what you have-use a toothbrush and brake cleaner- grease the snot outta them and reassemble. They'll be good for quite awhile.

The seals are inserted in a guide - some places sell just the seals by themselves and that makes for a difficult replacement. All of these housings have inner guides !
Replacing the seal & guides as a combo is the preferred method.

I just so happen to have an inner axle seal/"guide" laying around here are some pics. There is just a thicker bit of rubberthat i guess you could say"guides" the inner axle into the carier but this is it.

note this is one for a 10 bolt.
