Hey. I sold him that engine. It is a polished turd.
What's wrong with the 5.3L injection set up?Current plan is to cam it, GM Perf. vortec heads, and get a chip from your guys at Howell. I may also replace the TBI wiring harness because the PO made such a butchery of it.
Also toyed around with pulling a 5.3L at the junkyard for $250 and putting FiTech setup on it. But I already have this low-mile TBI block I paid $250 for, so.....

...j/kShoot, I don't know about compression; I haven't gotten that geeked out on it yet - that will come this fall most likely. I may also run heads like those you linked. If I can get up in the 250HP range, I'll be happy. Trying to keep it running the factory TBI setup and I'd really like to keep the factory exhaust manifolds, but I do have a set of headers I can throw on; just trying to avoid a lot of exhaust work if I can. If I start chasing the horsepower rabbit too hard, I could end up chasing it really far down the money hole...Yep that's a lot of work to lose CID
Using the vortec heads what kind of compression can you get?
Yeah, see @bent72 , Steve gets it.No replacement for displacement....8.1 all the way...j/k
For what you use that truck for and the plans you have for that TBI350...should run real good. People are starting to give the old chevy small blocks a bad wrap cause the LS's are such a superior design and put out a lot more power, but I say if you have the stuff already, just run that. It will be simpler and cheaper in the end and with a cam and better flowing heads plus a chip, you will probably in close to the range of a tired 5.3 anyways (I said close to the range...not in the range, haha). But it will run good and I think you will be happy with it. Plus, no re-engineering, basically just bolting stuff into place

I was referring the latter part of his post read below:Oh shut it, I told you 8.1 as well

Heck I still might just throw new gaskets on the TBI350 and call it good. It's just hard not to start thinking along the lines, "well since I have the motor out sitting here it would be easy to just throw in a new cam. While I'm at it, new heads would really liven it up. And since since I'm doing that....." etc, etc.For what you use that truck for and the plans you have for that TBI350...should run real good. Not a fan of those headsDon't forget vortec heads need a new manifold, center bolt valve covers, rocker arms and no egr provisions if that's important. And the vortec heads aren't capable of much lift, so be careful there.
