WOW Im going batty here.

Ok so I been trying to figure this out and Im starting to go a bit crosseyed.

Does anyone have anything that should tell a guy what spline count and adaptor pattern came in what years and transmission transfer case combnations?

there are several web sites that list them but it seams some contridict each other.

Here is what I have

1985 sm465/205 came out of a 1 ton

1983 sm465/208 currently in a light 3/4 ton (meaning the truck has a semi floating 14b rear hence my calling it a light 3/4 ton)

1977 th350/203 currently in a 3/4 ton

The 1985 1 ton sm465/205 combo is 32 spline output on the tranny and 32 spline input on the 205. The 205 will be a round pattern and have a slip yoke.

The 1983 3/4 ton will have a 32 spline sm465 and a 32 spline 208.

The 77 th350/203 combo is 27 spline.

Hope this helps.

That tells me what I have, thank you.

one site I was on seamed to sugest that ALL sm465s have 10 spline output but I knew that was wrong because I have seen them with more than 10.

Another site said there are 10,27 and 32 spline 465's but listed funky years like the 27 and 32 spline versions were 88 and newer only.

yet another site said there was only 10 and 32 spline 465s and didnt list any years.

You can see my confusion. If you dont mind me asking where do you get your info?

I got mine from doing lots of research from different sites and actually buying the parts and comparing.

Sm465s only came in 10 spline and 32 spline outputs. They are all 10 spline inputs.

That info has been posted up here at CK5 ad nauseum over the last 10 years. A search should have found the info for you...remember, we're good at Chevy truck stuff here. Better than any other Chevy/GMC dedicated site I've ever seen. ;)

Don't forget the 2WD versions which are 35 spline output...:D

I did do a search Rene but I got a bunch of threads just like mine.

A few specific vehicles where answered but it didnt answer my question.

Mostly I got doubler application threads. I now KNOW what I need for a doubler lol that was answered a lot.

Likely a case of too much info coming back. That's the one downfall of such a large 'subject specific' database I guess.

I know I've answered spline count Q's at least 30 times in the last 9 years that I've been here. Anyways, I wasn't criticising...just curious if you had checked here first. :waytogo:

Yea it would be nice to have all that on the tech page but I understand that takes someones time to do. Its weeding through thousands of posts to find your info. I had a simular problem finding the rear disk brake info I needed. Then I got a big head and pissed scott off too.:haha: OOOPS!

adding question

do all autos (350,400,700) have 27 spline outputs?
meaning, if I get a new transfer case for my 85 700r4, I will need a 27 spline input right?

thanks

I'm not 100 % positive but I'm pretty sure the round 6 bolt pattern 32 spline NP205's were in 86-91 1 tons.
I would bet the 85 you have is still the 10 spline with the race track 8 bolt style adapter

Here's a site with some pretty good info.
http://www.high-impact.net/transmission_and_gear/Tcase_NP205.htm

Again ,I'm not 100% ,but pretty sure ,been a few years since I was researching the same info.

Is there a correlation between the round pattern and the syncro 205's?

The round pattern started in 85 and all 85+ 205's are 32 spline regardless of trans.

All of the syncro'd 205's I've seen were the earlier firgure 8 pattern, however, I believe the option was available roughly 82 thru 86. As far as I know the syncro'd 205's are only in trucks with the auto locking hub option (that is not to say all auto hub trucks had 205's, simply any with 205's were syncro'd).

Hope this helps.

the slip yoke 205 thing is not true always either. every 80's 1 ton crew cab i looked at when i was shopping had a bolt on yoke. maybe it's a crew cab/2 piece driveshaft thing. the only slip yoke 205s i have actually seen where from 1980. but i'm not saying they where the only ones.

my 84 reg cab had a slip yoke 205 synchro in it. also auto hubs.

85+ are round patterns

if the rear shaft had a carrier bearing it was fixed yoke.

thats what i was thinking, but i havent looked under very many regular cab 1 tons. just the crews.

I think only crew cabs NP205's got the fixed yoke from 1980+.

ok, I'll be specific, cause I'm looking at transfercases

I have an 85 with 700r4 and 208. Looking for 241. I have a 241 behind a 400 thats local I'm looking at, from an 89 burb.
What do you think?
:)

your 700r4 is 27 spline and the 241 from the 400 is a 32 spline. but buy it anyways. its a good tcase. you can always swap input gears.
