im thinking of getting a 5gal. or so air tank to bolt down in the back near the tailgate of my k5, i heard this could be dangerous because of it simply being inside with u, but under the hood is fine...im running about 100psi, maybe a little less, any opinions?

I guess it would work If you dont mind riding around with a bomb inside your cab.

guess he should get rid of the fuel tank too, cause it might explode. :doah:

your statement is stupid. an air tank is not a bomb. if you don't properly secure the tank, then it would be dangerous. you can put a bullet through the side of an air tank and it will not explode. the air will escape though.

Gotta love Mythbusters....

screw mythbusters. I have worked around compressed air for years. its only dangerous when you are doing something dumb. carrying an air tank is not dumb.

Thats like saying walking with a knife is deadly. Only if you are stupid.

ummm, it was a joke....

And you don't need to tell me about air tank safety.. I've been around tons of that stuff...

Man those scary air tanks we ride on all the time. Better approach those with caution. I lived next to a big rig repair place and they have air tanks stabbed poked crushed and basicly f__ked up all time never hear of any thing happening to the people around them. Basic air tank does not carry enough air to fly off and hit you. Doesnt carry enough to rip the seams on the welds so I see no problem with it in the back of the blazer.

They say a picture is worth 1000 words so here's my 2 cents

Both these compressor tanks blew at aprox 100 PSI.
PS. Your ignorance clearly shows and I really do not enjoy being called stupid.

Damn I would love to know the back story on those. Name brand or china made. That one looks rusted but the other look real clean. Like the metal was not up to stuff.

Sorry. I should have put links in my other post
Here they are.

Those cheap 5 gal air tanks that you can buy are made of very thin metal and are similar to the above that blew and have no drain valve or safety features. I think they would be a very bad choice for a OBA system or to keep filled on a regular basis inside your vehicle.

damn...i think i started a war,but thanks for the input guys, i think i just might go the extra length and find a 2-3 gal to fit where my coal box sits...i see a lot of people with those....thanks again guys!

Most air tanks get rust on the inside, thats why compressors have drains at the bottom. At least mine does, drain it once a week or every time I use it for a whole day or 2

the first tank you show was not certified. its says it right in the article you linked. the other was poorly maintained. you made a blanket statement that air tanks are bombs. you deserved to be called on it. You are most likely not stupid, but your initial post was. your free to give your opinion on here and not base it on anything. but I'm allowed to respond to it. I am far from ignorant when it comes to air pressure. I have seen people injured by it, and have a great respect for its ability to harm, but your statement had no merit.

Ryoken I was in no way giving you a hard time. I know you are aware of the dangers of compressed air.

To many people share their opinion with people as if it is fact. Thunder read my posts very carefully, if you feel that I have personally insulted you then you can PM me for my number. I'll gladly discuss this over the phone. You have been here a long time and have a high post count. your response to the original poster may carry some weight. rather then scare people out of doing something you should be giving them all the information.

Thats one nice unexpected feature I like about my OBA. Found out that there is a very slight leak somewhere in the system. Never have looked for it. Completely bleeds the system in about 2 days by itself :thumb:

Yeah, I saw that episode too (and I got your joke :wink1: !).

It was the one with Jaws, about a scuba tank exploding when hit with a bullet.

Mang, you need to settle down.

Thunder's statement was not incorrect. Any receptacle holding compressed gas is a type of 'bomb'.

And even if he was totally wrong; so what? Why didn't you simply provide a 'correct' answer instead of spazzing out.

Maybe you should have asked Thunder to define bomb for you as your definition is obviously different from his.

Ryoken I was in no way giving you a hard time. I know you are aware of the dangers of compressed air.

Maybe you weren't, but Paul's response was a result of your Mang outburst.

Judging from this statement you're (by definition) in full Mang-Mode. You're making assumptions and are so defensive over what? Over air tanks!!!

And your back-pedaling is a clear indication you realized that you stepped in it.

Giving you the benefit of doubt, I'll assume you had a pretty bad day today.

But in the morrow, will be a new day :D !
