Does anyone carry their spare on the inside? If so post some pics, not the stock carrier either.
I am planning on installing one bucket in the rear of my Jimmy, and mounting the spare behind it, thus allowing me more storage room for other stuff. I have tossed around the idea of external tire carrier, but everyone is doing that. If you have any ideas, post up. Feel free to do diagrams, anything that will get more gears turning.

I can't get you a pic at the moment, but my buddy uses an L shaped setup behind the rear seat in his 79. It holds the 33's that he runs perfectly, but he complains that it blocks the view out the rear window. He used a piece of 4" channel welded to a flat brace that bolts through the floor into another plate for strength.

What size tire are you planning on using? I'm thnking about an inside mount as well. The stock one barley fits a 35, so there is no way it will work with the new tires.

Wait you can fit a 35 on the stock mount? I didn't think there would be enough room to mount a 33 on it. If that is true, I might be able to get me 33 to mount in place of the way too small 31 that is there now. PO had been using that for the spare.

I am running 37's, and planning on mounting it at an angle behind the rear seat. The view is something I have considered, also with the tire mounted flat it has some storage space in the back of the rim. I don't like having it flat on the floor because of the heat.

This is what I have in mind, excuse the crudeness. The tallest box i have is #2 at 20"s, the rest are 12ish "s. The rear seat is probably going to be offset to the right a little for rearview reasons.

number code:

1&3 seats
2 dry storage box
4 cooler space
5 spare
6's parts and tool storage
7 wheel wells
8 OBA tank

The space you are showing for the spare tire seems pretty optimistic. Is there more room in the back of a 1st gen? I was thinking that a 33 hits both the tailgate and the back of the stock seat. Maybe you will run a 25" donut spare?

No, I am only going to be running a single bucket seat in the rear, the spare will be mounted at an angle. I have it mounted flat now, and have about 2' of space behind it. I may end up mounting it elevated to get more room.

A worn 35x12.50 fits, BUT the seat back wouldn't latch all the way on that side. A 33x12.50 fits no problem. BFG M/Ts on both.

I just went out and did a little test fitting. A 39 will not fit in the stock position even with a P/U tailgate. So with the stock seat if you stand it up it would have to be at an angle. So maybe prerunner style? The more I look at it I think it will end up outside. Or maybe I'll use a 37 for a spare.

i had a 36" behind the rear seat for a long time. drilled a hole in the floor and put an 9/16 eyelit bolt with some thick fender washers. then went to the junk yard and found a spare tire hold down bolt from a cherokee and a thick washer and nut to hold it down.
i now have ditched the seat and have a 42 strapped in for the ride.

Sorry for the hijack, but what you are saying is a 33X12.50 would fit on the stock carrier with the stock rear seat latched. That is good information to know, thanks.

Yes, I ran it like that for about 2 years. The tire had about 50% tread. This is with the '78 - '91 seat, I don't know about the '73- '77 seats.

1beatk5; Is it just strapped to the floor or did you make a mount?

I have come to the conclusion that I will need to elevate the spare tire. That will allow me room for tools underneath the mount, and make it so I can store parts there also. Where I am going to mount the rear seat I have enough room for the 37 to lay flat on the floor.

I have eye bolts on the floor by each wheel well, with a ratchet strap accross the tire, spare steering box bolted to the bottom of the spare. also have some other spare parts in a small duffle bag under there too.then i strap my big bag of tools to the top of the spare. This is temp. situation as i want to build an in floor tool box under where the seat used to be. there is plenty of room for a 10" deep box under there. then i'm going to go soft top only and move the tire into the tail gate for more room and possibly more seating over the tool box.

I have a half-worn BFG AT 33 12.50 15 tire mounted on the stock mount its a little tight but it would not be hard to modify the mount to fit a "new" tire.

Sorry these are old pics(my interior is much nicer now)
