I had my 1990 Suburban inspected a couple of weeks ago. We have annual inspection that costs $18. They checked my gas cap, wipers, signals/brake lights and lights. That's it. With a small but obvious leak in the exhaust, they never said a word. No emissions test on a 1990.

On my DD, in addition to the stuff above, they plug into the OBD and if it is not throwing a code, I pass the emissions requirement.

I see guys complaining about emissions/registration/inspection. What are the requirements where you are?
 
i dont complain, my dads close friend owns a garage and everytime i go there i passed. no matter what, tires bald, bad gas cap, etc they just let me know whats wrong i say alright so i can fix it later. having close friends and connections is good!:D
 
They're getting pretty strict, here in DFW. Houston, San Antonio, and other large cities have the same rules.

My k5 inspection was great. Safety-only since it's 25+ years old. took about 10 minutes and cost $14.50.

OBDII is easy...unless you throw a code, an I mean ANY code. Thankfully, I don't have any OBDII-equipped vehicles. Not sure on the price.

OBDI (my DD)- they don't even plug in, but it's a long and annoying test that costs about $40. They check all the usual safety stuff, then they run it on a dyno for about 20 minutes and take exhaust readings. watching them violate your truck like that is like having to watch multiple greasy guys "have relations" with your girlfriend right in front of you:angry1:. and, they make you pay for it:screwy:
 
Surprisingly here in CA there is no safety inspection. I'm surprised at the crap they allow on the streets. There are laws, and a lot of 'em, but evidently they aren't enforced too well. I've seen vehicles with no front bumper or headlights on the road:eek1: Cracked windshields, broken headlights & turn signals, expired out of State plates, it's all good:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Smog inspections are to Federal standards. Yep, strictest standards in the Nation for a new car sold in CA but the smog inspections drop back to Federal standards.

I see lots of new vehicles with the cardboard temp plates removed. So they have ABSOLUTELY NO PLATES AT ALL driving down the road:doah:

Now here in LA if you have the audacity to break a PARKING RULE then the Evil Flying Parking Enforcement Monkeys are all over you in no time!

i got nothing i oregon. no checks of any kind. though i think they check to see if you have insurance sometimes when you get new plate stickers.
 
AZ is pretty easy , no inspections except smog , and mine is old enough now its just pressure check the evap and gas cap , and sniff it on the rollers .

Older guys have it easy , no hood opens on 75 back , just simple sniffer .

5 years old or newer has no test , then after that its just plug in and see no codes .

67 or older no test .
 
no clue, i got connections..

then again in nj anything over a 4" lift you need to go through a strict tilt test, which i said **** that, im not wasting gas to drive an hour and a half to get failed..hell no cops even know of lift laws up north by me, they just see a big truck with big tires that looks cool..many like, many hate, but they haven't given me any problems, knock on wood.
 
in Wisconsin the emmisions suck

ANY car 1968 or newer needs to go through emmisions, even if it didnt come with cats its needs em'. They are really hard to pass, my truck passed smog in california, but failed wisconsin emmision. There used to be a way around this, just regester them where theres no emmisions, but they just started asking for address, last month. I am expemt now, cause I bought collecter plates, the only thing is i cant drive in january with them, oh and i gotta have another vehical in my name.
 
Yeah, CA is draconian about smog laws, but they vary by your locale. Get away from the urban centers and they're not nearly as bad. No safety inspection of any kind.

I think MD, VA, DC are pretty bad, but I don't know as I'm still registered in CA. They looked at me like I was trying to hire a hit man when I wanted to order oversize tires for my Burb, though. You don't really see any lifted or other non-stock trucks here (that changes as you get further from the urban hell).
 
MS is just a safety inspection. no smog. If your lights, wipers, and horn work and your windshield is not cracked on the driver's side then you're good. I was a licensed inspection person when I was at an independant shop.
 
Ya, AZ could be worse.. but mine always struggles with emissions. The only way I pass is if I lean it out and make it run like ****. There is a new way to get around it though, and that is to get "collector" car insurance. Talked to my agent today, and she said I just have to show some pictures of it as if it was a show truck (haha). Limits to 7k miles per year per DMV I hear, but I'm not too worried about that since its not a DD.

Oh, and it is super cheap.. 6 bucks a month for liabilty =)

I live in Maine...it's a really bad state for inspections. There are sooo anal. My '86 k5 blazer is in the shop getting minor stuff done to it. But after this year it should just be a in and out deal for at least another 6 years.

Most of Ny is-

Safety only 1981 & older.

Safety/visual emissions check 1982-1995.

Safety/visual/OBD2 check 1996 & newer.

The 9 county NYC area I believe also has a dyno test, although I don't know what years that covers.
 
No inspections whatsoever here in Upstate SC.

However, after seeing some of the deathtraps on the roads here, I think that we need some sort of safety inspection program.
 
Here in MA, 85+ gets safety and emissions, 84 and older gets just safety. But I hear thats changing soon. I hear MA is doing away with the dyno, so it will just be 95+ getting the obd2 done.

here in Cali, no smog if your truck is titled as a 1975 or older, diesel, or new for the first 6 years. So for me, my 74 k20 no inspection, no smog, just mail in your payment for regi, and your sticker comes in the mail within 4-5 days and your done. If your insurance is not in dmv's system, they require your insurance agent to send the insurance to the dmv, thats all.

Inspections are required if your trying to register a salvaged title for the first time, your vehilce has been no-op for more that 10 years, or vin numbers do not match paperwork (dmv fault or not) where they're suspose to be that will draw a red flag. If your vehicle is considered a gross polluter, it will have to be smogged every year for a couple of years.

In some counties in California you have to either smog at a test only station where no repair is allowed and they just test it right off the bat or you go to a standard smog station. All 95 and older vehicles go to a test only station. If its obd2, it is hit or miss with the test only.

my other truck is a 80 yota and it stinks at idle bad, but it passed test only emmisions with no problems because they test the vehicle at 15 and 25 miles per hour on a dyno, and my rig doesnt pollute when your above 1500 rpms. glad they dont just test the rig at idle, id for sure wouldnt pass.

I can't get collector insurance on the Blazer , trucks too ugly now . The Chevelle will be easier .

7k a year ? Don't they know the cable unthreads and we can drive by the tach :wink1:
