installing a new injection pump problem

before you remove the pump you make the mark to line it back up? friend pulled his pump. knows very little. didnt make the mark. have the pump back. im afraid we install it and the runs away or it blows up...

so what should be done? thanks

is there not a cast in line already on the pump? I dont recall when I had mine off. I was THINKING (we all know what happens when ya get to thinkin) that there was a mark cast in the pump & into the cover, just not necessarily where it was before. That would atleast get in the ballpark.

There is a scribe line on the pump already, and also on the block where it mounts. Can't go wrong on the drive as it has three bolts and a dowel.

That mark is only to get you started, you still need to have the timing set by someone with a diesel timing light.

Or just work in 1/16th of an inch increments till it sounds right and doesn't smoke. I for sure don't know of anyone I know who has a 500$ diesel timing light. Towards passenger= retard/ Towards driver=advance. Only adjust the timing with the engine OFF. Theres only a few degrees of leeway either way with the 6.2, shouldn't be too far off from the mark.

The last shop I had set the timing on a 6.2L charged $35 (somewhere around 1998 dollars).
