installing an inline electric fuel pump...

so i picked up a stock 350 out of a 87 Scottsdale to put in my 76 k5 to get me around for a while. turns out there is no provision for a mechanical fuel pump... :whistle: anybody installed an inline electric fuel pump?

what's the best electric pump to install on a 76?

would it be a good idea to also get an oil pressure sensor so the pump shuts off when engine isn't running? :dunno:

any information would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!
 
the switch i found has 3 prongs, One wire goes to the pump, one to the start circuit, and the other to the ignition circuit. So, when there is no oil pressure, the switch connects START to PUMP, and as soon as you start cranking it runs the pump. When the oil pressure comes up, the switch connects IGN to PUMP, for normal running. When oil pressure goes away (because you just hit that rock and tore the pan off the engine, for example) it again connects START to PUMP, and disconnects IGN from PUMP, so the pump shuts off. the motor has the provision for oil pressure sensor anyway so i don't see why i shouldn't install this aswell.. :dunno: better safe than sorry i think...

Its not a bad idea to wire it in with the proper oil sender,but not a must either..add a fuse to the hot wire too..

Its hard to say what brand of electric fuel pump is "good" any more--there are many cheap ones on E-bay or Amazon that'll work just as well and last as long as the name brands...you only need one with 5-7 PSI output for a carb, I would make sure the pump is rated for ethanol too--some that use a solenoid with a fuel and alcohol resistant piston to pump the fuel are better than the old style that had rubber diaphrams or bellows that the alcohol can ruin..

Remember mounting them close to the tank is a must,if you want it to live long...they "push" gas a lot better than draw it from far away..
 
i'm going with inline because i don't want to drop the tank and i really don't want all the computer crap... i feel that the simpler the better:waytogo:

not sure what kind of oil pressure switch to use though... i found one on ebay The GM part number is 3986857. if anybody has done this or knows of sombody who has i would like to know what switch you/they used.
 
I ran a Bosch universal inline on my 383, wasn't enough pump. Buddy put one on his stock 350, had no issues.

That Holley looks alright, I've got an hp125 internal regulated Holley on that motor now. It's a nice piece, real quiet unlike the old Holley blues :pimp:

I carry my old Bosch as a spare pump now, would suck to have one fail in the middle of nowhere IMO
 
The switch in the injected GM setups was a backup for the fuel pump relay, that's it. I'd carry a spare relay before I worried about an oil pressure switch.

Interesting... This was the biggest reason I took the electric pump off my burb. The carter (I think) pump I had was stupid loud. Especially inside a big empty burb with no interior. The buzzing of the pump was super annoying at idle...
