Hey all,

I'm finishing up my 14bff rebuild and when I put the pinion carrier into the axle it sits about 1/16 to 1/8 in up and will need to forced in. I read over at bill's site,

When installing the pinion bearing retainer assembly into the axle housing, the journal on the head of the pinion will have to be driven into the bore of the straddle bearing.
It's a tight fit but shouldn't require you to pound it in. Use a brass drift on the end of the pinion to tap the retainer and pinion into place.

So how hard do you have to hit this to get it to seat in correctly? I just don't recall it being that tight when I was taking it out is all.

I'm not sure what to say other than i've never ran into one that wouldn't slide right in

The pinion carrier needs to be aligned a specific way for oil flow. Maybe you have it rotated?

Rotate the ring gear to allow the teeth to mesh. I had to do that with mine and thats all it took.

The ring gear and carrier are not in the rearend yet. I have the carrier set in so the oil gallies lined up(open area lined up with the top, drain hole on the bottom). The pinion carrier has the one sqaure flat side the goes to the left when looking at the pinion nut.

I'm going to pull the pinion support bearing and see if the pinion carrier will just drop in.

We had to tap mine and my friends support in with a dead blow hammer. Didn't take much but they would not just slide in.

That's what I am seeing now. But the good news is I found the issue.

There was some gualing in the front part of the housing. I took some 2000 grit and smoothed it out and she does now slide in fine. I was drinking some rum and cokes so I didn't want to work the rest of the install. I'm sure .003 looks something different after a few drinks.

Thanks guys!
