interesting old Chevy Truck climbing Pikes Peak

I posted a link to that video in the lounge some months ago...
I've watched it probably 10 times, and again just now!..

I LOVE those old promo films of GM cars & trucks..the one they mention about the Alcan Highway is another very cool one to watch..

Goes to show you don't need a Dana 60,huge tires and a 6+" lift to go through some tough trails (and places where none exist !)..and just how rugged things were built in the 50's..

(if that truck had no P/S though,I bet the drivers wrists felt broken after that ride!--my '56 3200 chevy pickup a 2wd,used to kick back like a mule when you hit train tracks or drove it off road!)..

Pretty smart to pile all the mountaineers in the bed for more weight & traction...I noticed they only used one truck to make the final climb, maybe in case the other one blew something up,or rolled..?...
I would have liked to see the ride BACK too,I bet that may have been more scary and punishing than the climb was...

I bet those mountaineers riding in the bed on the final part of the climb had some sore nuts after that rocky ride..:rolleyes:

At the 3:24 mark,I noticed a large branch rise up and put a nice scratch in the drivers side door..so in addition to the step on the bed and some hub cap damage, and some scrapes on the diff housings,it did suffer only minor damage considering the terrain..

I often wonder if those two trucks were sold as "slighty used demo's" or were sacrificed to the autopsy crew to see how everything really held up..

Talk about bragging rights,if someone did buy them after the film was made..!.."My truck climbed Pikes Peak without using any roads "!..

No noricable loss of power at altitude. They must have been numb by then. The Jimmy tbi almost won't make it in high range. But I guess if they were in 4 low, maybe.

Cool commercial.

The 235 straight six was pretty torquey --mine would bark second gear fairly easy, and take off in second on a good grade without bucking or pinging..you could put it in third at 15 mph and just step on the gas and go..had great low end torque..probably a massive flywheel too..

If I recall correctly, the tag on the kick panel stated it had 123 HP..but I bet it's torque rating rivaled a 292 straight six..and it peaked at about 1600 rpms..

I dont know what it had for rear end gears but was probably 4.10's or maybe 4.56 ratio..it'd still go 70 if you needed it too!..

I would like to see a brand new truck make that climb. You know one sold with 20s ....

Good lucking getting a chance to do that today. They barely let you walk around at the top these days....

I like the guys bouncing around in the bed, and hanging off the side. OSHA approved!

When men were men,and the government let them BE men..and a truck was a truck!..not some coil sprung sissy wagon..

That's pretty cool! Interesting to see those old trucks in action.

Watched that vid many times over the last few years. The only one I like as much is the corvairs going through the jungle! Haha **** looked intense!
