Just thought i'd post up alittle thing that just happened to me recently with my TBI motor,,,
i was on my way home from visiting someone, i stopped at a redlight and the check engine light came on, i thought to myself, oh great, now what, seeing as this is a brand new motor and trans
I go to take off from the stoplight and there is absolutely NO power, sluggish, spittin & sputtering and when i finally do get it going, it just sounds like it's missing a random cylinder or few erradically.
Luckily only a few miles away from home, limped it there via back-roads and parked it for the night.
Next morning i go out to start diagnosing the issue, it almost acts like a severe vacuum leak, so i start checkin things out. After not really finding anything, i pull the vacuum feed off the MAP sensor and plugged the hose with my finger, the engine idled up for a second, then back down to normal and smoothed out, so i picked up a new one thinking maybe that was broken inside somewhere/how, no joy, still ran like crap.
FINALLY, after some time tinkering with everything else, i start messin with something i really did not want to mess with,,, the fuel system. What's interesting, is the first thing i did, was remove the gas cap, when i tried to start the engine after that,it had a REAL hard time getting going, and just wouldn't run, just from that alone. SO, i decided to remove the fuel filter and hook up the pressure gauge kit...cranked it over, and well,,,, 4 psi pressure DAMN..
Dropped the tank, got everything removed, bought a new fuel pump from NAPA, the OEM replacement Delphi, (uncle discount from working there
) and upon removal, i noticed the little rubber hose going from the pump to the feed tube on the sending unit had a small slice in it about 1/4" long,,,wow, never seen this happen before.
SO i'm assuming the pump isn't really bad, but just losing pressure from the hole in the hose, but i went ahead and replaced it with the new pump just because it was new
got it all back together, hit the key a couple times to prime, cranked for a couple seconds and fired right up and ran great.
SO, just thought i'd share this experiance for those of you running fuel injected systems, that just because the pressure is low, it may be something as stupid as a $1 part?
