Intermittent Engine tick...HELP!!!

My engine ticks intermittently...Always after starting and then it quits. I imagine it is the lifter pumping up. No url (oil for you city folks). Has anyone experienced this with any engines in the past? My engine has 124,000. Still strong and good compression. I see no need to scrap it yet. What should I do? Replace the lifters or use 50 weight oil or what? I'm not sure that replacing the lifters will do any good if the oil galley is clogged up any. How would I unclogg an oil galley anyway? I don't want to dislodge any other trash and create any more problems. Thanks

You get the ticking ONLY at start-up? And it goes away once everything warms up? I would say it sounds more like an exhaust leak than an oil problem. I had on old Ford 1 ton that would tick like Big Ben until she warmed up and the exhaust manifold expanded towards the block.............

I would first run some Marvel Mystery oil. Put some in your url and some in your gas and that should clean the motor really well. See what that does. It fixed mine one time when it did that.

My Jimmy would do that, it would go away after the lifter pumped up, I'd say its just a small piece of dirt in there that does that. Try some synthetic oil, that cured my tick and the blue smoke on start up.

Sounds like an exhaust leak to me...try the marvel anyway, its good for it..

sometimes it comes and goes...it's not an exhaust leak. checked that out.

How is your oil pressure/ You pump may be getting a little weak and be taking a little longer to get the oil circulated at startup..

From what I can tell...it's on one side only that you hear it. and only one lifter...that I can tell.

The old factory service manuals would tell you to pull out the lifters and disassemble each one and clean it. This would most likely fix your problem if you wanted to take the time to do it.

Ive heard mine tick on and off, then the other day I had the air cleaner off and put my finger on the injectors...It was coming from there.

I'm not a mechanical genius, but I was given the following advice from a mechanic about 6 years ago. I've tried it on 2 different engines, and after 1 week the problem went away. It never happened again with that engine.

Change your oil, and use 1 quart transmission fluid. Run this way for 1000 miles, and then change the oil again back to normal. Supposedly this lubricates a lot easier.

I don't know if this will work or not, but my fiancee's father told me about something he did on his car many years ago. His car had a little valve tap and someone told him to pour a little oil into the carb with it running. He said that he poured it slowly and gave it a little throttle when it wanted to quit. After a while the tapping stopped and he said it never did it again the entire time he owned it. Might want to try this - I guess it can't hurt!

I think he meant transmission fluid. It has such a high detergant content that it'll clean that sucker right on up. GM top end cleaner sounds like good stuff too.

pouring anything downown the carb will do NOTHING for a lifter. I could see that if you have dirt in the lifter, tranny fluid will help clean it. You could try running it in engine for a bit. I wouldn't go 1,000 miles though. this could also be just a weak lifter. and nothing will fix it but a new lifter. You can buy lifters for 30.00 a full set. just a bit of a pain to put in.

He said it was oil. He's pretty good with fixing things and knows his stuff, so I believe him. Maybe he didn't have a stuck lifter, but what he described definitely sounded like valve tapping.
