Internally balanced engine flexplate?

Okay, so if i buy an internally balanced rotating assembly from summit for a small block, this means i need a neutral balance flywheel/flexplate correct? and i need it for a 2 peice rear main? The stock one that came off the 400 wont work right?

I am having a heck of a time trying to find one that isnt stupid expensive, would one work from a stock 350 or someting that is internally balanced?
 
My externally balanced 400 flexplate was $52 from summit. The one piece rear main style (86+ iirc) wont work as the "circle" on the crank is way smaller than the 2 piece ones. So are you saying your buying an internally balanced rotating assy for a 400? That would mean it would have to be a one piece main.. Can that be done on a 400? I didnt think it could... :dunno:
 
yea a kit from summit that says its a internally balanced. Ill post up the link later when im home.

Yes, if you buy an internally balanced rotating assembly your 400 flexplate will not work. You can use and other flexplate from a 2 piece rear main as long as it's the proper tooth count (either 152 or 168). I would suggest you buy an SFI approved flexplate through summit since they are made thicker and less prone to cracking like alot of them do. I went with a TCI flexplate and it was around $65 or so.
 
okay here is the link to the kit im planning on getting. Yes it has dished pistons, wish i didnt have to run them, but my heads only have like 62cc's i think. (still have to confirm that before i buy).

It says externally balanced, but up above that it says balanced with a yes next to it? anyone know? i will probably end up calling them.

it means the rotating assembly is balanced and you still use the 400 flex/ fly wheel.
 
okay, so if it said up top that it wasnt balanced it still would use the stock flexplate but it wouldnt be as precision balanced.
 
I clicked your link and that is an externally balanced rotating assembly that IS balanced and uses your stock harmonic balancer and flexplate. Keep in mind though, you CANNOT balance the rotating assembly on an external balanced engine without having your harmonic balancer and flexplate so this means they are "assuming" what your stuff is supposed to weigh. Trust me when I say this otherwise just ask Greg72 about the balanced rotating assembly he bought for the 496 stroker I built him that I had to remove 400 grams from the crank because it wasn't done correctly.

Also, that same kit had it said no next to balanced then the rotating assembly would not even be balanced at all regardless of internal or external which in reality still isn't balanced per what I just said above.
 
So he would want an externally balanced 400sbc kit that came with harmonic balancer, crank and flexplate for an ultimate balanced package that has all been balanced together.... correct?

Actually that would be the second best thing, the BEST thing would be to buy the rotating assembly then have his local machine shop balance the whole thing WITH his harmonic balancer and flexplate.

yea is this what i need? if you have the time could you find one on summit that would work for me? a kit that is .030 over with dished pistons and is balanced the right way? i have to call summit before i order but would just like to see your suggestions

Ahh i see now. Good info. Wage92 listen to this guy fyi :D And also i wanted to point out that I got the sfi flexplate for mine from summit, its a pretty nice piece and looks beefier than the stock one i had (which was bent)
 
I wouldn't trust Summit for balancing. Get the kit, get a stock 400 balancer and flexplate if your running an auto, take the rotating assembly to a good machinist and tell him you want the rotating assembly balanced. He will know what to do and do it right, if he is any good.

Where in NY are you?? If not far from Bingo, I know a guy that built my 454, one hell of a nice guy and will do you and it right.

Ya gimme his name. Im just outside of albany, but good work is hard to find!
 
I'd have to find the receipt for what he charges for a balance, but I want to say $100. He charged me $400 for getting the block done on my 454, and then I think it was $400 for assembly, he did everything but the heads, they were already done, but checked them to be on the safe side.

His name is Don, he owns Precision Crankworks in West Windsor.
